    So my question is this...

Why do we ever want none damaging staves? Why do we ever make staves of lesser damage? I can't wait for the system to be more sophisticated than "get most damage get most levels". I know we're building and evolving this game, but the combat system never seems to evolve past this basic formula.

That is not an alternative to gear and levels. It is something that would be good too see in addition to gear and levels. The reason people will make staffs of lesser damage is they don't have the materials to make greater damage (which by the way @Envy, seems to be quite rare drop from maple tree...less rare in shardfall :) )

I think it is an alternative to gear and levels.

If I can block your best move, then you have to have a secondary move, if I can counter that move, then you need a third move. By then, it may be too late because you'll be dead.

In this system, having the ability to counter and block makes levels and gear less important - which is a good thing.

That would be great for a league of legends style game, which can be fun short term. "old school roleplay experience" to me promises something to actually work on over time, i can not stand games that just hand everybody everything on day 1.

I'm not suggesting that it be handed to people. I'm saying that if you, for example, use Death Magic over and over again, I should be able to counter that or block that rather easily if I come prepared for that.

Right now that type of balance doesn't really exist, and frankly it's difficult to see where it will ever exist. The idea that I have to use a 5 stack of Celestial Blessing just to get a 40% resistance to Death Magic, and oh yeah it only last for 2 minutes, is just silly. I know we're not really in a balancing stage of development, but we should be, imo.

And the impact of levels is currently that someone such as yourself will have a maxed out dex, str, and int, giving you a massive advantage over anyone that doesn't have enough skill points to keep up. It's a bad system, but because I know the dev team has a lot of experience and a great history of improving the game, I'm mildly confident that it will eventually be much better.

Still, it's frustrating. We've had about 10 releases in a row where combat changes but doesn't get more balanced. It's fundamentally broken, imo, and I'm not sure what will ever fix it. My guess is that it will always be broken, it will just be much less broken than it is now. Which is a shame, because I don't think it had to be like this. I think we could've and should've balanced this thing from the beginning and kept it balanced each release. Instead we've been adding in more and more stuff that doesn't balance with anything.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out. I hope I'm wrong about it all, I hope I look back on these statements someday and I'm proven dead wrong. But my own experience from playing many many games over the years tells me that won't be the case. The only way this combat system is going to balance out is if it's fundamentally changed to focus less on DPS and the shortest path to that is blocking (100% of a damage type) and countering (a move with a move set up specifically to hurt the person using that move).
