Macros are not just a poor game design workaround. Many uses out of them.

    Can't pwn nubs? /macro
Can't pwn nubs fast enough? /macro
Someone else is using a macro to pwn you? /macro
    Win button? /macro

I think there is merit to trying to introduce randomness to combat.
The biggest issue I can see is with utility skills.
In order to ensure that you have access to an ability, you need to specialize in that ability.
This means that if you are playing an offensive character and want some healing ability, you need to have a bunch of healing spells in the deck to make sure it is available at the right time.
This in turn greatly reduces the offensive power of the character, though gives almost constant access to healing.
Thus there is little point in running low probability, circumstantial skills.

I think there is some merit to having some slots that are not random, and others that are.
Or be reserve certain abilities to a slot when they come up.
If you get 6 abilities, all random
    R R R R R R
but slot 6 is reserved for Heal, then when heal shows up in any slot it is switched with lot 6, which is then locked until use.
    R H R R R R -> R R R R R H
If the heal is used, the slot is once again random until the ability shows up again.

That or have X slots that always have the same ability, and Y slots with random abilities.

Yeah, that's pretty much what they said they were gonna do, it's called Noble Skills.

Also, total red herring, but Andrew Wiggin used macros to command. Hell, he had other players botting sections of his army for him.
