It's the funding model the game survives on. I would have bought into this game if it used the subscription model, too... but it doesn't. The upside is, you can definitely PLAY the game without ever buying anything else... but likely you'll use gold to buy the digital goods from other players that DID buy them with cash money. I am not sure there's anything wrong with that.

I don't think this is the case. I think Port is trying to use the mobile model of funding the game with a handful of really big spenders and everything else is bonus. SotA's the first MMO to try that model as far as I am aware.

    well now that's creative :)

as for myself.... I may grab this..

I have extra land deeds... with the 500/day the Oracle shells out (is that a permanent thing?) it basically turns a taxable row into a TF for $20

That would be one application for it. Just keep in mind that things could change later ( tax increase, oracle gives less, etc).

A sale doesnt mean something is failing. We have Monster energy drinks on sale all the time at my 7-Eleven and their sales are anything but failing.

A completely different product, in a different market, sold in a completely different way (ie: the store, or the chain it belongs to, buys at wholesale and sets its own price), but otherwise... yeah... totally the same, mate :)

The only situation that I would be concerned is if it costs the company $40 to support one player to be on the server, and there are 1 millions players buy the game for $20 by Nov 1.

Again, something on sale doesnt mean its failing, use any analogy you wish.

I don't have to use analogies. Indeed, the analogy of a 7-11 was something you were talking about. I don't see the use in analogies when we have reality.

In the game market, which is what we're talking about, games that go on sale at a significant discount before they are released signal a particular message to the market.

You don't have to like that... you don't even have to believe me... but it's definitely a thing. It's something people notice in the industry, and talk about. *Shrug*

What is there not to like about the $20 sale?

It's perfect for an impulse buy!

Definitely more chance to bring in new players in time for this month's telethon. They get to see the downsized Raffle R36, can upgrade so as place on available POT lots, anddd enjoy 15% Black Friday bonus!

The talk generally goes something like this: "Oh look, Steam's giving away their game. Huh, we hate it when Steam does that." That's because ITS NOT THE FAULT OF THE DEVELOPER, it is all on Steam.

Its stupid for them to put Early Access games on sale. But again, that is Steam's model. So whether its a thing or not, its not something anyone but Steam can control.

We went through this earlier in the thread; I'm guessing you didn't read all the posts. Basically, I find it hard to believe that Steam, and Steam alone, is allowed to set the price of another company's work.

Even Steam's own FAQ http://www.steampowered.com/steamworks/FAQ.php says the following:

"Pricing is very title specific, and we've got a lot of data and experience to help you decide on what the best price is for your title. We'll work with you to figure out pricing."

That "you" being mentioned there in the FAQ is the publisher. That sentence is suggesting a collaboration where the publisher ultimately decides, not Steam, and Steam alone, in charge of pricing itself.

And this sale will end and the price will go back to its normal price. And then the next sale will come along and it will go on sale again.. Like it has done in previous Steam sales.

How is this different then any of the previous Steam sales?

It's no different mate. But the issue that was being discussed is the nature of slashing prices by a massive amount before a game is even released (whether they rise again or not), and how that is perceived.

You have nothing to fear then, for I am sure I will personally cover someone's lack of $25 expenditure before the week is over. It's all good!

    Cheerio!

LOL! I'm glad there are sales, I picked up two accounts in fact, gonna give them to friends/family as I see fit. :) For the negative nancy's concerned the game is on sale again, maybe the game can afford to go on sale because income and players are increasing well!! :D Stop worrying so much and enjoy the game that you are so worried will fail! :)

That is exactly the model that every free-to-play game follows. GW2, SWTOR, you name it, if an MMO doesn't have a subscription, the publisher is using this model.
