    Greetings fellow Avatars,
SotA is more and more looking like a great game, but one of the things I still don't like is the strange Jumping, that was implemented in a rush. It's hard to control and it looks simply strange, when you jump again and again and again against fences, walls, etc. (just like in most MMOs), until you manage to somehow get over it.

I'd rather prefer the Ultima IX way of jumping and climbing, where you knew exactly how far you can jump and how high you could climb. This allowed a much better control over you character and provided some possibilities for jumping and climbing puzzles without an Arcade Feeling. And with the great climbing animations, it felt pretty natural.

    Cheers,
    Andreas

Hey Andreas, it just takes practice. I actually quite like the way jumping works as you have to think about it a little, more interactive than just click jump without anticipating how high.

Do some practice by 'jumping fences' - after a while you'll be a pro 'hurdler' and grow to love the jumping :)

Please no platform puzzles I can never do them :p ... on a console I'm not master but on a pc / mmo - like game the camera angles makes it feel like you're fighting the interface and not playing a game

Jumping needs a couple tweaks still, but overall I'm satisfied with it. A simple jump (tap the spacebar) should allow you to clear small rocks and the fences surrounding plots. You should only have to hold the spacebar and jump to either a) jump farther, such as to jump over the sewer sludge, or b) jump much higher, about 1.5x the height of a fence, which will put you near Olympian ability but otherwise its not worthwhile.

Honestly, if the world doesn't have odd seams and plot fences, there wouldn't be much need for jumping. Its nice to have, but its implementation probably won't be a make-or-break for anyone.

Have you played Ultima 8? Jumping torture there.

I love the jump mechanic. Once the fatigue portion is factored in, it will be darn near perfect!

Jumping is good as-is right now (IMHO); they do plan to add a stamina component so jumping will have a cost but that'll come a bit later I assume (same with running and swimming and armor/pack considerations).

Yes I did - I quit the game at the first lake ... I never got those "patches" that made jumping easier

I'm with Carlin - I rather enjoy the jumping. With practice you can have a ball. Just running headlong at a fence, holding the spacebar down, and releasing at just the right time, is immensely satisfying - you vault over the fence like a champion. Static jumps are also low or high depending on how long you hold the spacebar down.

Maybe I should disclose that I played U8, with AND without the jumping patches - it was much easier with!

I like the jumping we have ... it just takes a little getting used to

And I would not mind jumping over "pitfalls" etc but not a whole platform scenario ... I might throw a keyboard out the window ..:D

I'm not saying, that jumping is bad. I missed it, too, in the first release. But I think, there are better jumping/climbing mechanics possible. I know that Ultima IX hat millions of flaws, but the jumping/climbing there was quite fine for me. Just take a look into one of those Walkthrough Videos on Youtube. The only drawback is, that it's not very dynamic. But I'm not looking for a jump and run or Arcade game.

This sounds extremely laborious, just to get over one simple fence...

I like it as is, but it hadn't thought about U9 jumping in ages.

The icon for where you are targeting to jump to (colored for your chance of success jumping that height/distance) could be interesting.

I kind of haven't liked how you can't do a standing long jump easily. You have to sync your running and jumping. I hope the game isn't too platformy, but the jump mechanic would make any needed platform jumping hard. It would be nice if they figured out a solution for this.

Jumping is fine, but movement as a whole is still quite jerky for me.

They have definitely nerfed the height of jumping since R3. Some of my parkour tricks are no longer possible :(

Specifically, the first one in this video of mine:

That's an interesting video. My first time playing was R5 and even with the limited jumping I got to interesting places but not like that.

Maybe jumping (swimming, etc) should be a skill. The better you are, the higher you can jump. Good for thieves and assassins.
