In your opinion, which is better for ranged: bonus damage or increased critical chance?
Increased crit chance combined with Dex training can be a wicked ranged attack.
I'm happy with supple leather and what it offers tbh
Supple by far imo
Especially the chest and leggings give high amounts of crit chance.
Easy choice for me as an archer with 240 hours in game
You could always mix-n-match. Do Supple Chest+Legs for the most crit chance and Hard for the Boots, Gloves & Helm for a little extra damage. Wouldn't be too bad considering most bows come with nice crit chance anyways.
Edit: Also because there are more options (innates) to increase crit chance than there are straight damage.
Will you still get the set bonus if you mix it up like that?
Yes, you will get the bonus. It doesn't matter the make of the leather, just the fact that it's leather. Now, if you mix cloth + leather, I'm not sure. But like me, I'm currently in White Iron Legs + Boots (Helm soon, just ran out of White Iron) with Chest + Gloves Carapacian Fortified Cloth. Best defense with least amount of fizzle (18% after I get the helm). So yea, mix-n-match, don't be stuck to 1 thing..
