Another excellent article on the lore of SotA just released on Ten Ton Hammer! Check it out:
    https://www.tentonhammer.com/featur...rriott-hickman-talk-history-origin-of-species

I won't quote the good bits here regarding lore, but this one deserves some attention as it involves the community!

Richard says that he intends to start releasing information to backers, perhaps through round table conversations with Tracy Hickman. The idea is to empower backers with the canon behind the world so that they can begin producing fan fiction. Approved works will then be integrated into the game in the form of journals, books, and oral tradition in an attempt to populate the world with a sense of literary culture.

That's awesome! The community has done great things for the game, such as Heraldry, Coats of Arms, Unity Jams, Stories, and even Poems! I'm very much looking forward to seeing how this awesome community can contribute to story!

Talk about the lore and the article below!

I do like the approach they are using to include other sentient species into the game.

Wonder if they are capable of procreating though ? Or will the first generation of Elves be the last ? :)

Would be nice if the Dev+ community got some of this info before a journalist.

I don't care. If they've made a decision on something and are no longer seeking input, then I don't need to know about it until the game ships, tbh. A journalist, however, cares a lot more about an early leak of the real product than some decision which may not happen.

That is a very interesting question. A moral one at that. If you were to create a race of slaves and had the ability to do so at will, why allow them to procreate and evolve?

Ha yes, I was thinking about "Jurassic Park" while I was writing as well.

"Did you make sure *not* to add any eye of newt to this batch Igor ? I don't want another incident like the last time." :)

Sounds like the Elves were created hundreds of years ago by the Wizards of the Obsidian Empire. I suspect they've already pro-created by the time SotA starts so that there is a reasonable sized contingent of them.

Not at all, you want to control them and avoid at all costs that they can get organized, build families or any not desired relationships. If you can you remove all procreation or evolution ability.

    But remember...

EDIT: Late for the Jurassic Park reference! Damn ;)

Well, there is no guarantee of that.

I mean Elves in this canon may live extremely long lives, or simply be magically immortal.

No guarantee, but I think it makes the world/story more interesting.

If there are 3 really old Elves and they can't pro-create, then the world is less diverse and there was little to no point of adding them to the story in the first place.

Three ? We are talking about creating an army here : One would make batches in the thousands.

The image they provided with the article could actually be what an "elder" Elf looks like, who know whether they would age in the same manner as humans. :)

And what if there were 30,000 eleves? I mean we're talking army here.

It only takes 1000 specimens to propagate a species.

Great article, thanks for sharing that. :D

I love the fact that RG and Hickman are working together on the story and lore of the game. As an author, he's written some really cool and detailed stories in his novels, and it's also nice to see how much effort they're putting into fleshing out the background of the world, versus just launching and going " Oh yeah, here's some lore, lol" as some games have.

Definitely sharpening my pen in anticipation. :D

A most excellent article! The paragraph about magic was like a metaphor for making SotA years 14 years after UO. I also have a feeling that Tracy and Richard have a LOT to say through the story being created.

    Awaken :D

    --

    Darkening horizon, twisted torn sky,
    Watched beneath Chaos' glaring eye,
    Shattered moon, broken and bale,
    Fragments of magic, ethereal vale.

Shadows pass from legend to myth,
    Heroes arise, brought home forthwith,
    New Britannia calls, she welcomes,
    Forsaken, frightening; destiny beckons.

Bring forth your Virtues, forgotten they be,
Friendships and foes; all companions we,
Choose now, the paths we must now dare,
Truth, Love, Courage; your souls laid bare.
