Can you build an external passage that connects to the upper hallway?

I know you mean you can't pick that entrance when you are placing the room.

If you place the room, (say on a 3x3 4 entrance room) and then use another junction to build a path to the upper hallway, will it connect? If so, a workaround would be to remove the original connection, leaving it with the connection you desire.

still not how it works. the connecting piece would just show a blank wall.

Yes, I see that now. I have made a screenshot to help illustrate the problem:

It's somewhat difficult to see, but this is a slew view of a temporary dungeon set up to show this problem. The upstairs balcony @Alley Oop is referring to is visible in the center of the screen. In the near view are two dungeon corridors (a T and an L, adjacent to each other). You can see that the balcony is offset by about half a 1x1 dungeon piece; clearly no connection is possible.

the offset DOES NOT MATTER. if there is not a recognized entrance there, it could line up perfectly and would still only show a blank wall.

I agree that it needs to be a valid entrance (with the blue crossed hammers). It will also need to be aligned properly.
