I've taken an eight hour time lapse of the sky over Kingsport! Here is the video. Main reason to do this was to observe paths of the various celestial bodies and activity in the night sky.

We can identify at least eight satellites, coincidence? Also, some pretty interesting changes to physics can be observed lol.

    Have a look:

Hmm... the clouds and stars never move.

Oh it's no coincidence we have at least 8. I haven't looked but they're coincidentally colored as well are they not? :)

I felt like I was at the Planetarium! Thanks for the video because it's very hard to see if you don't catch it at the right time.

Nice. I too am interested in charting out these celestial bodies. Garriott said they still need to name them all. Names would be useful for crafting. What did you use to record this? It must've taken a lot of space. I use fraps and a smaller default 30 second video is half a gig. How much space did it take?

I believe in UV they named the planets after the virtues.. I suspect they can't do that here and there's more than just planets up there now. I'm curious how closely they'll follow Ultima astronomy.. ie.. are there 3 comets? :)

Clouds seem static, but the stars and whatever galaxy disc/arm that is does at least track from west to east across the sky.

We can't be too hard on them yet because it is still early, there are a number of oddities related to all these things though that I'm sure many of us would provide feedback on if and when they seek it!

Another thing that would be worth studying is the Darkstarr Moondial
It's after all a mechanical model over the visible celestial objects.

I use bandicam, it took 2gb to record 8 hours, not that much really. I was recording in xvid though, not raw video. I beleive if you install some codecs you can also get fraps to use xvid, I used it previously I think but fraps can't keep up with games that require more power from the system than SotA does, so changed to bandicam.

Based on the R18 Release Notes, it sounds like the planets might be named after the anti-virtues.
That still means they should be easy to match to their former virtues (just, inverted, as it were), and there needs to be one extra named (probably Doom, since I don't think The Stygian Abyss is a good name for a planet).

Hopefully comets and such will be added. Not sure if there is still a 400-year alignment of the planets, but it seems likely.

    Very nice.

I'd love to have exchanges of views with other "up-nosers", about what they already found in their sky observations.

    Thank you for that
I am liking what they are doing and have planned but there is some crazy physics going on there for sure

looks like they are staying aligned for the moment to get timings down, then they'll release them into proper orbit and we'd have to track more than just east to west on a single lane. fan flipping tastic job devs, this is the best skybox iteration i've ever seen in a game to date.

I enjoyed watching that video :). I couldn't help but notice that the objects orbiting Novia have different 'rates of orbit', with the 'celestial donut' being the slowest.

Edit: Would be nice if we could track them using an 'in-game' telescope.

I will say that they look so much better when they are not rotating at warp speed. They should just make that slow rotation permanent.

I hope that is the plan; individual orbits would be great, especially if they can mimic positioning enough to get both the U5 sky where the planets indicated the position of the cities on the map, and the alignment like in U7. I'd love to see a higher resolution bitmap used for the sky, as it is already blurry (and I want to use the spyglass on it to see the planets better!).

I do agree that this skybox is awesome! Once its finished, I hope it goes on the Dev+ asset list!
