Pretty cool stuff.
Reminds me of when I was creating a replica of Lord British's Silver Serpent Pendant.
Love that thing! Was also very upset to see someone had already cranked it out!
Key shank carving added, and shortened some dimensions (I may be an ultima fanboy, but no way in hell was I going to pay $425 for a silly metal key that opens nothing...yet!). Now to split it into three and add the bits that will link them together!
Man, I'd love to have that; don't imagine coloring the key bits seperately would be feasible. Would be badass if it were actually three seperate keys that you could connect together
colored... that would depend on ordering it in different colors. The metals don't really come in anything but different metal types, but the plastics are a hell of a lot cheaper and could be ordered in yellow, red and blue
As far as the separate, but connecting? That's the plan!
Is it a dreidel? A lawn dart? A corkscrew?
It's the Key of Three Parts, which opened the shrine to the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom within the Stygian Abyss, formed from the fragments of Truth, Love, and Courage
I am seriously interested in buying one, just so you know
You have just used three things I've heard of together in a context I had no idea they existed. I've never played an Ultima game in my life. (UO doesn't really count)
One of only two reference pics out there... the other is also on the Ultima Codex and is apparently a pic from the NES version (going off the pic name)?
I recommend thou get thee hence to the strange realm known to mortal men as GoG.com, where thou canst buy passage to the fabled lands of Britannia (once known as Sosaria) and the Lands of Lord British, and experience for thyself the story of the Stranger later known as the Avatar
I'll let you know what it comes out like on the print side so I can verify tolerances and such, but, with one more thing left to do (and that is cut the teeth), Here it is!
Key of Truth:
Key of Love:
Key of Courage:
And the whole in "living" color, the Key of Three Parts:
Those are freaking awesomesauce! Even if it were in plastic, with a metallic finish would look amazing
I'll be ordering them from Shapeways tomorrow in the colored plastics to see how it looks .
Should have an update in about a week
Final versions, order going out tonight to see how feasible they are singly:
All righty... I have these on order, and will post some pics of the unboxing when it gets here some time around March 3-5th! Once I am sure it will come out clean in the plastics (the cheaper of the materials) I will open the individual models up for sale in the plastic and steel variants (it is too big for the precious metal categories, although I will be scaling it down some to see what the damage will be there *grins*)
Printing completed... shipping in progress. Should be here by Tuesday!
TBH, I expect the whole thing to be fairly decent, with the only possible wrinkle being the pegs that slide into the other two keys... the thickness of those did not do well the last time I printed something in plastic.
You might consider just oversizing those and sanding them down manually. Otherwise the fit could be off. Looking forward to seeing how they look.
I already took that possibility into account, having run into that problem with making "exact" fits while making the coin press. The proof of concept was exact, and if I had put them together I would never be getting them apart again. The second attempt I made shorter by a quarter millimeter all the way around, and it was just a tiny bit loose. So, in this instance, I made them an eighth of a millimeter short in all dimensions, but in plastic the very real possibility is that they will be too thin and flimsy to make it work right. If this is the case, I might simply make them flanges that need to slip into the two channels rather than the small posts at the end.
And... I'm also looking forward to seeing how they came out!
