Thanks alot ! Isn't it wonderful that I knew all these things and never have read most lore and or these books ?

A sorcerous cataclysm has remade the ancient and magical world of Sosaria, where a misguided plan to bring ultimate order to the land has altered its destiny forever. Now past, present, and future are one...a unity that sets in motion an astonishing age of discovery and conflict for this strange new world.

a misguided plan indeed, how did I also know that :p

Well yes, I have seen them in another plane !

And so this might have occurred in another plane... but it happened.

SotA has also been touted as a "one world" "new world order"... didn't it ? :)

The Age of Man and the Rise of Mondain

Some time before the Moongate wars, other creatures had made their way into the world, among them the tribal progenitors of the race of Man. Because of their smaller numbers, relative ignorance and minimal threat to the more advanced elder races, the tribes of Man were largely ignored and allowed to roam wherever they wished. Only when a tribe tried to establish a holding too deeply within either Elven or Dwarven territory were the unfortunate humans made aware of their mistake, usually swiftly and fatally, as one would remove a pestilent infestation. It is during the aftermath of the Moongate Wars, when the elder races retreated to the fastness of their remote mountain fortresses and secluded forest canopies, that the tribes of Man began to flourish and grow in numbers, strength and knowledge. Lacking the lifespan of either of elder races, men were driven to explore and understand everything in relatively short order, often without any consideration for the consequences. Where an Elf would quite happily take a century to research a particular theory, short-lived men experiment incessantly with a determination that appears maniacal to the normally insouciant Elves. Likewise, a Dwarf would carefully consider all points of a project, plan accordingly, and then with all materials and workers assembled, execute that plan. Men, on the other hand, often make daring (and glaringly dangerous, to a Dwarven mindset) intuitive leaps in logic, that often landed them several steps back from where they started. For every four intuitive leaps that would leave a Dwarf laughing and scratching his head, Man would make a fifth that catapulted him far beyond any expectations. Thus it was that during the seclusion of the elder races that the race of Man quickly sprang forth into prominence in every conceivable way. Across the continents men strove and fought, contending amongst each other for territory and resources, until several kingdoms finally rise out of the ashes. Among these are the domain of the Lord White Dragon, whose true name was lost to antiquity in favor of the moniker used by friends and enemies alike to denote his strength, ferocity and cold, ruthless logic, and the Wizard-King Wolfgang, leader of the nation of Akalabeth.

It was this era that gave birth to one of the greatest evils ever to walk the face of Sosaria: the sorcerer Mondain. Born the second son of King Wolfgang, Mondain soon grew envious the inheritance that was denied him by the misfortune of birth. In an attempt to curb the dark tendencies of his younger son and bring him back to the paths of righteousness and wisdom, Wolfgang offered his younger son a deal: spend a year studying in an abbey dedicated to love and service to the people of the land, return and prove himself a man better suited to helping his brother lead the people of Akalabeth, and gain one of the most prized magical relics of the age, the Sun Ruby. Mondain, recognizing the potential inherent in the Sun Ruby, decided that a year was far too long to wait to embark on his own rise to power. The very next night, he killed his father and took the Sun Ruby for his own. In a cruel twist, he allowed his brother to live and ascend to the throne, only to spend the next several years sowing evil and discord across the continent, rendering his brother powerless to stop him. He accomplished this by spreading evil and death wherever he went, eventually cracking open the very ground to create vast, labyrinthine dungeons within which he brought forth all manner of foul beast. Within the heart of this underground network, he spent his time furthering his understanding of the dark magics he favored, and it is thought that many of the foul creatures we know today are the direct result of these studies. The culmination of his research brought forth the Daemons (and their more powerful kin, the Balrogs) upon Sosaria once more by exploiting the weaknesses in the hastily recreated forbidding, much to the chagrin of the elder races. With help from the power he drew from the Sun Ruby, Mondain bound these creatures to his will, charging them with defending the deepest recesses of his underground empire, while he unleashed his burgeoning malfeasances upon the surface world, to bring his dark vision of Akalabeth forth into reality.

    The Rise of Lord British

It is during this time that a young human from another world happened to arrive via moongate. While not an historically uncommon occurrence, this event would come to be a turning point in Sosarian history. The young man, confused from his trip through the gate, commenced to explore his new surroundings. In short order, he happened upon a ranger in the woods, who was engaged in chopping down a tree. He hailed the woodsman, startling him greatly, and causing him to his next swing and accidentally cut his leg. The ranger, one Shamino Sallé Dacil by name, dealt with his wound with a minor healing cantrip, which astounded the young stranger. After a brief discussion, Shamino took the stranger under his wing and graced him with the name by which he would be known henceforth: British (a reference to the lad’s claim that he was from the “British Isles”). Under Shamino’s tutelage, Cantabrigian British began a startlingly rapid rise through the circles of power and influence, initially taking for himself the title of Champion of the White Light. Thus assuming the mantle of protector, he set out on a campaign to end Mondain’s reign of terror, which culminated in the battle that would send the sorcerer fleeing from the lands of Akalabeth. In recognition of this heroic feat, he was granted rulership of half the kingdom and the title Lord British, Protector of Akalabeth. After ascending to the throne in his own right, his first act as co-ruler of the land of Akalabeth was to put forward a call to arms, charging all who dwelt within the land to go forth and seek out the remains of Mondain’s forces and drive them fully from the light of day. With Mondain defeated and his minions dispersed, Lord British commenced with securing the peace and prosperity of the lands of Akalabeth.

    Shamino and the White Dragon

Shamino, as a result of his part in the campaigns of Lord British, gained great renown throughout the lands of Sosaria. None was more impressed with the accolades heaped upon the ranger, and his reputed hand in shaping the man known as Lord British, than the ruler of the Lands of Danger and Despair, the king known as the White Dragon. Recognizing the strategic need for another castle to extend the ability to defend his domain, and for someone to assist in that defense, he began to consider this Shamino as a potential ally. The White Dragon also knew he was fast approaching the end of his days, and with no suitable heir to his throne, he hoped to bring his daughter, Beatrix, together with this young man and thus provide security to his lands and people in the ever more likely event of his passing. To this end, he built a relationship with the young warrior and promised him lordship over a portion of the land in exchange for his fealty and provided the new lordling assistance in planning and constructing the castle from which he would rule. In the years that it took to construct the castle, there has been word of a romance budding between the newly minted Lord Shamino and the Princess Beatrix (wisely fostered but not forced by her father), that may bear fruit in the near future.

    The Darkness Returns

For many years after the defeat of the Dark Wizard, the human populace knew peace and prosperity under the various rulers of Sosaria. The elder races, having finally recovered from their near-extinction during the Moongate Wars, saw the light of justice and hope dawn on the horizon, and began to once more venture forth from their seclusion. To the surprise of all, a fourth race, the diminutive (even by Dwarven standards) and gentle race of Bobbits made itself known, coming out from their hidden mountainside glades to walk among the world and seek their place within it. Over time, the various races grew to trust one another, and both goods and information were soon traded freely across the lands of Sosaria, ushering in unheard-of growth in knowledge and understanding. As time marched on, the horrors and blood of Mondain all but vanished from memory, due to the lack of contact with the elder races, and the shorter lives of the younger.

With a reason to band together gone, the minds of men soon turned away from more altruistic ideals and towards personal greed and petty rivalries. The first to descend into strife and discord were the lands of the Feudal Lords and the Dark Unknown, so disparate were the ideals and pursuits of the lords in those lands. The remaining continents, the lands of Akalabeth and of Danger and Despair, were lucky enough to be more or less under a unified leadership to prevent this chaos from taking root as deeply, but the affects of this were still felt. In Akalabeth, the heir to Wolfgang watched in abject dismay as more and more of his people openly supported Lord British. He sank so deeply into despair that he came to appear listless and lost, and issued senseless and useless decrees. This so confused and demoralized his people that he has been known as “the Lost King” ever since, and all but a few of his staunchest supporters and guardsmen remained as the rest looked to Lord British to lead the kingdom.

In the lands of the White Dragon, things continued to develop beautifully between Princess Beatrix and Lord Shamino, with the people looking on in eager anticipation to the possibility of a strong and united line. The King and his prospective Prince ruled the people jointly, with Shamino’s spiritual bent beginning to manifest in the populace in many ways. Only time will tell, however, as there is news that Lord Shamino is making preparations to embark on a journey to meet with his friend Lord British to discuss some matters of great import.

It was in this time of uncertainty and intrigue that disaster struck. From the darkest recesses of the land, hideous denizens erupted forth, ravaging the land and its people as the evil host surged forth. All but the largest towns, cities, and the castles of the Lords themselves were razed, the people tortured and killed, or worse, devoured alive. In all but the lands of Akalabeth (now known to all as the lands of Lord British) and the White Dragon, the pettiness and greed of the lords led them to shut their gates to the populace outside, and sealing their doom. Lords British and Shamino, always preparing for the worst, had pulled all those who could be retrieved before the enemy arrived behind the stout walls of the castles they controlled. Despite preparations to the contrary, neither possessed enough men-at-arms to do more than defend themselves, so massive was the onslaught that was released upon the world at large. Knowing that there remained some intrepid individuals in the land, Lord British put forward a call for aid, beseeching all the noble hearts of Sosaria to aid in pushing back the tides of darkness. It is rumored that he has even cast his call out across the Void, to hopefully draw forth a hero through the Moongates that might combat this rising tide. Lord Shamino, much like his steadfast friend, is also said to be in search for aid, but his call is, in keeping with his ranger ways, more subtle and circumspect, and it is rumored he walks the lands as a simple warrior seeking to see the faces of those he might enlist.

It is in this dark time we find ourselves, my fellows. For good or ill, we all have a part to play in this great drama… will you aid in bringing back the light, or will your actions bring this all to tragedy? Only future historians can decide which result will win out.

This ends the history of Sosaria, and next up are racial descriptions and histories, kingdom specific histories, and descriptions of key NPCS.

*finally stands up from the laptop and staggers away...*

    Edit:

Upon copying this to a google doc, it became evident to me that there are holes and little inconsistencies in the story, and other areas where some exposition is necessary. You can see the history as it changes and evolves (as I will probably never be happy with it, so you may never see its Final Form *laughs*) in via this link to the History of Sosaria, its kingdoms and peoples, according to the Ages of Sorrow LARP!

I will likewise post snippets of future edits, and the above link for reference.

well, in this one case, since everything in this is a one-time item, I guess you could say that for the kids, they're the ultimate rares :D

Also... since some of you reading this will have already seen the "blow-by-blow" on the UDIC FB page, I'll just leave this mostly completed result of my first serious attempt at leatherworking here ;)

Oooh... forgot to post the end result :D

The bracer is a dual purpose costume item. For one character (the one in the kids' LARP), it is part of the armor from his days as a guard/minor lord for the White Dragon. For Tachys, it is a family heirloom that he doesn't completely agree with, but wears because it was given to him by his father just before the man disappears forever (presumed dead).

There are some things I needed to do (and now see the sense in doing), such as the use of an edge beveler, and a goof with a shading technique that went slightly wrong, but still... I can deal with it. *laughs*

Now... the thing that will knock you for a loop.... the biggest part of the cost of this was time invested, and about $2-3 for the leather for the bracer!
