To make the crafting possibilities even deeper, how about tiering the crafting components and gems?
This would enable exceptionals to make some sense other than yield more XP.
My proposal would be a system in which there's normal, exceptional & beyond tiers. Obviously, you get an exceptional if you roll a crit while crafting. In addition, include the ability to upgrade normals into exceptionals & beyond with fuel and ancient essence just like artifacts. The same could be applied to gems, combining them with fuel and essence to make them stronger.
Every tier should add 5-10% bonus over regular component stats. Even cooler if you get to imbue your components after upgrading them (think about it, elves are capable of imbuing their bow strings with great power, maybe one day we uncover their secrets).
This would enable for essence and materials sink, as top crafters would consume huge amounts of fuel, essences and raw materials to make the top end crafted gear in the game, which would require high effort and production costs, with high rewards.
I would suggest a 5-tier system just like artifacts, but someone gotta do the math and planning to make sure this doesn't break the entire game (adventuring and crafting altogether).

I suspect the current item archetype system would be very labor intensive to convert to such a flexible system because of the sheer quantity of combinations with different types and tiers, possibly meaning a major system rework.

What you guys think about it?
