I somehow never gave UO more than a cursory look. Is it too late to play at this point? Is the magic gone? I need an active community and social interaction to make an MMO last for me.

    Thanks!

Last time I tried it (early 2015?) I never saw another player in 3 weeks, playing about an hour a day. YMMV!
Completely different experience compared to 1997-2000. Of course, the urban sprawl in the wilderness is still there, although maybe not quite so annoying.
About this point in the thread, someone will come along claiming "but such and such private shard has 1000 players login every day!" etc. ;)

My opinion is no, it is never too late to enjoy something new even if it's been around a while. I played for long long years and enjoyed it immensely . T he communities there are very friendly and the guilds are as well. :)

The, "official," servers are just a bunch of disjointed nonsensical crap.

Try out UOForever. It's got the best mix of UO golden age rule sets and modernizing updates. Richard Garriott himself logged on UOF, which in my mind is a golden seal of approval.

    Trust me.
    Best. Game. Ever.

Shroud should really just be a carbon copy of 1997 Ultima Online.

Where do you get the client for UOF? I don't want to get a virus! LOL

Also, what era is it set in? Is it as active as the official servers?

Try UO Second Age which is a well-run highly authentic free shard and reflects the peak of UO in terms of fun and game balance (pre-Trammel but fixing exploits from the initial launch). Don't let the mostly unmoderated forums there scare you, people are helpful and the archives loaded with game play details. Not for the timid but by far the best UO experience IMO.

Yup UO is all over the world, actually the most populated freeshards are in asia... that says much for the quality of this game :)

I still play daily on official servers, will probably continue until they shut down.

I stopped back into Atlantic after a short 4-year break and I was surprised that it was still heavily populated. Go with the enhanced client, at least that will give you better than 1024x800 playing space ;)

Which do you guys think would be better for a first time player, Atlantic or player run server?

I was kind of going to check out UO if it came to Steam, but I haven't heard any news on that plus EA is known for not having a good relationship with Steam..

Just so there's an active player base to interact with, I'll be set. I'm a little scared about how dead the forums are for UO Forums and the UOF forums.
