Ultima IV is my favorite RPG of all. I played it over a summer when I was 12 years old, usually on the phone with one of two friends as we explored together.

Anyway, I was thinking of buying the game on GOG for $5 to try and recapture some of the magic. Does the gameplay still hold up in modern times? I remember keeping a notebook about the conversations I had with key NPCs about what to say to other NPCs and where I should go in the world. Was I just being obsessive, or is that really required to get through the story?

Also, I read in a review on GOG that the music does not play properly or at all on modern PC's using the provided DOS emulator. Is this the case?

    Thanks for any info!

The GoG version has worked for me (though don't expect too much more than basic music :); there's also a fan graphics patch that helps upgrade the sprites for Ultima IV:

Speaking of Ultima IV, my favourite version (which I still play today on my mobile phone :D) is the Commodore 64 one, which has been recently remastered.

    Here are some Before/After screenshots:

The before is a lot better! I prefer that version.

I just finished U4 for the first time in 28 odd years (yes, aware that 28 is an even number, I know this crowd).
It is still very playable. The sound was a bit screwy and I listened through my headphones with my headphones off.
Graphics are just fine, taking notes is not only needed but half of the fun.
Finding a boat can still be a problem, but not as a big a problem as in U3.
Absolutely love the different dungeon rooms. Forgot about those.
Free on gog. Can't go wrong.
Playing U5 now. Even better, but I wish I had the music. Maybe I will fire up the Commodore someday... or not.

Great, thanks for all the help, guys! Free is better than $5, methinks! :)

I recently tried U7, but man, the graphics just look so poor on a 27" monitor...Worse, in my eyes, than U1-6.

Now if I could only find a legit download for Phantasie and Questron, LOL.

They certainly still hold up today. I'm currently playing through Dragon Age 2, and while I find the world interesting, I can't help but feel how little it's progressed from games like Ultima 4. The world feels more linear than U4. The morality choices seem far more contrived and less natural than they do in U4. And those aspects only become more intense in games like U5 where NPCs actually have schedules. Unlike most modern games where a lot of NPCs just stand still or pretend to have a schedule by walking aimlessly through the environment.

Dragon Age 2 had some moments, but was pretty terrible for game choices. They did a much better job with Inquisition, along with going back to a lot of the stuff that made Origins so enjoyable.

Remember to do this to help... oh well, I cannot paste in screen shots from the clipboard.

Under the Ultima Install directory find "Dosbox Configurator"
Under Basic Settings Tab, uncheck Full Screen.
Under Advanced Settings, pick Windows Resolution of 1280x960 or something with a 4:3 aspect that is much smaller than your native.

This makes the graphics the same size (or closer) as when you played it before. Makes a world of difference.

Sorry, replied to other post and did not see you replied here. No music in IV. Not that I can tell. Grab a midi from somewhere and play it in the background. :)

I always say play the NES or Master System versions. They hold up well.
