Unable to figure out crafting...

Forgive if there is documentation somewhere and I just can't find it, but I have no idea what to do about crafting. I tried equipting a specific tool and trying to do something, nothing. Open recipe book no recipes. No idea where to find recipes. Been running around for almost 20 minutes now no idea...

 

Yes, I initially had issues locating the starting recipes.

They are under Point (9) of the "Controls" section in DarkStarr's post here : https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/forum/index.php?threads/release-2-instructions.6104/
