The obsidian item of unlearning seems to work on all other skills except this series.

Can you break down for me what skills you are trying to unlearn exactly and what that tree may look like now? I assume you have the item in your inventory? Are you even getting the option to unlearn when you right click?
I ask about what you are trying to de-level and the other levels in the tree because let's say you are trying to use it on corpse explosion. You won't be able to take it below 40 if you have Summon Skeleton unlocked because Summon Skeleton has a pre-req of Corpse Explosion at 40.
I was not able to repro as the book worked for me...you may also want to restart the client fully if you haven't yet.
