    It looks better to me. A dark and foreboding forest beyond:

    Just don't look too terribly close at it or you can tell that it's a black background with 3 or 4 "layers" of flat trees to give the illusion of a impenetrable forest.

    Here are my graphics settings. I like it dark.

    Time of day/sun angle has an effect. So, a normals issue? And/or specular map? Here I am facing a tree to the right of the north entrance (in Deep Ravenswood in this case). I have a light spell going. It does not affect the tree. Or, it affects it the opposite of what I think it should. Notice the dark arc on the skinny tree to its right.

    Time of day from top to bottom screen shot went from mid-day to dawn.

    Now dusk...The previously dark forest is now easily visible. The tree and its skinny neighbor are now lighter than before. Though the light spell still does not work as I expect.

    And a set of similar screen shots from the Linux half of my machine, Deep Ravensood, same tree to the right of the north entrance (notice skinny neighbor).

    Then dusk. I waited a little too long, and the shadow of night started moving up the background trees (dark bit at the bottom). The background trees were easily visible, though.

    Also found in Blood River to add to places to check after fix. Wait, holy crap I got close to the wall, started posting the bug, a wolf attacked me, I turned around and killed it, then when I finished typing, I turned back around and trees were there. I don't think it's a simple LoD issue because I backed up and the backdrop didn't go away.

    Forest curtain (edge of scene) darkness has been fixed for Ruins of Utheim and Deep Ravenswood

    but they're still pitch black.

    Bonus bug. I believe the grey mist effect associated with heavy precipitation mixes with the curtain wall to produce distorted mirroring. It is easier to see live. First noticed during a forest road siege at Ardoris

    Interesting. Late morning to midday standing at the north gate of Deep Ravenswood. Facing west, the mirroring happens. Facing east, it doesn't. Normals issue as well as a specular map issue?
