What all do base gathering skills do?

I know that base gathering skills increase chance of success, but do they do anything else, such as increasing the likelyhood of getting extra/other components?

 

I'd like to know if a higher skill gives a better chance to get the more rare components, like beetle carapace.

 

They'll increase your chance to crit as well (which can be seen as an effective increase to gathering speed).

 

wish they added specifics to base like they do with meticulous, as of now 100=100% at tier 5 nodes, maybe even t5+, if its 100/30~crit at 100 like crafting yay, but still you have to be at a station to know this.

this also goes for all other skills including chaos bolt(my guess being as strong earth bolt/searing with dots/debuffs potentially surpassing fire arrow/balls dot)
