Will at least one mount be available at an NPC merchant?

That information will probably be in tomorrow’s Release Notes. Don’t know if it will actually be in the build though.....

It didn't sound like it. It looks like to get one without crowns you'd need to tame one, which can then somehow be traded for a rideable one. (Seems like a good business opportunity.) I'd hope for just one I could buy with IGG, though. Even if it's only one type. Though I don't really see the worth in them. I didn't bother in ESO, either.

I hope that this is not the case. Everyone should just be able to get a plain brown, non-flashy mount.

Release notes draft is up. I seem to be having connection issues with it ATM, but I got far enough to read the horsey part. There may be more info further on that I didn't see, though.

There doesn’t seem to be just one basic mount that doesn’t require the taming skill or crown store (or a previous mount backer). That’s not very good.

Well, there's technically coconuts, right? Or are those removed/nonfunctional now?

the level you have to have your taming at to get a horse is: one. new players start with that. you just need to get the supplies to do it. this is much easier than, say, crafting your own house.

they're currently bugged (unrelated to the mount development process, oddly). they do plan to fix them.

Yeah, I was hoping it'd be a pretty low requirement to tame a horse. It's sort of convoluted that you have to "trade in" the horse, instead of being able to ride it as soon as it's tamed, but I guess that was just an easier implementation. Kludgy as it is.

Let’s go test taming a horse with 1 taming skill. And a collar....

Cool. I was just about to ask how much taming skill is needed to tame say a bay horse. I'm going to try it on QA.

LOL, just tried taming a bay horse in Owl's Head. Skill level of 1, failed, collar went poof.

I agree we should be able to tame mounts. That was so fun in UO. I was not a tamer but I did manage to get my horse killed off. My tamer friend would then go get me another one. Having special horses purchaseable is fine but don't leave out the fun stuff. And let them jump please and a dismiss option to they can stay in the world.

I think a lot of non tamers don't realize how many collars get used up taming stuff. Though it won't take that many with a level 1 creature even without leveling up collar recovery skills. I predict tamers will be getting a lot of questions this week! The good news for anyone who doesn't want to tame themselves is I'm sure the basic mounts will show up on player vendors very quickly.

I really wish they had the turn in on QA for us to test. I wonder if they remembered that there are different kinds of taming necklaces. If you can turn in a horse tamed onto a crafted taming necklace but not one tamed onto a wooden taming necklace sold in the outskirts there will be some frustrations I think. (and that is how I expect it will work)

Here's some information that might be helpful to those looking into the horse trade-ins.

It would have been nice for tamed horses to also be mounts, but tamed horses and the horses you can ride ("mounts") are different assets. However, you can "convert" your tamed horse into a rideable version. (After the related update is on the live servers, that is.)

The bay horse, blanket horse, and palomino horse are still available in the world and able to be tamed.

Once you've tamed a bay horse, blanket horse, or palomino horse, you can trade it's taming necklace to any one of our "horse specialists" for a matching horse you can ride. There are 5 NPCs that you can use for this. Just say "accept a rider" or "taming necklace" to one of the NPCs listed below to get an overview of how the trade will work. Keep in mind that once your horse becomes a rideable mount, it's not usable as a normal pet anymore.
    1. Nob - The stableboy in Owl's Head.
    2. Bodan Koren - The Master Taming Trainer in Braemar.
    3. Corsten - the Master Tactics Trainer in Desolis.
    4. Falcon - An animal trainer in Aerie. Her stables are outside the gates near the main entrance.
    5. Oakley - A new stablegirl in Brittany Fields. Her stables are south of the gate to Central Brittany.
There is no fee for converting your tamed horse pet into a rideable mount.
