The way I see it, focus serves only one purpose that cannot be achieved with the cooldowns that already exist. That is to limit the length of a fight, but is this fun for the player? Having to abandon a fight because you "ran out of time" is only frustrating.

Many modern games have completely abandoned a mana system. Guild Wars 2 is one example. An even older example is Dungeons and Dragons (and many other tabletop games).

If the devs want to limit situations such as infinite healing, control abilities and longer cooldowns serve the same purpose.

What do you think? Is focus a good game mechanic? Or is there a better way?

So you don't spam your skills, maybe? Be thoughtful and selective?

So you go out of your way to get some resources to replenish the focus - mandrakes FTW?

So you might use some tactics/skills to better manage it - combos and such?

Don't know, maybe there are other reasons for it but I don't mind it being there. :D Makes me run faster when it runs out.

Focus aka mana is still in a lot of modern games that i've played, ESO, lienage 2, archeage, dragon nest, silk road and so on.. I think it adds more skill to the game then just hitting buttons or different skills.

    Yep, its an anti-skill-mashing approach.

I like the thought that something more innovative might be better though.

I think there are better ways, but I doubt you'd like the ways I suggest.

In my mind "cool downs" in general are pretty stupid. An invention of the modern MMO, "cool downs" serve to stagger the amount of DPS people can spam at each other in a blinding illusion of non-competitive level based horse manure. It's all part of a larger system that is broken because joe average player is too stupid to understand that it's broken.

    But I digress.

I think the developers are aware of my thoughts on this already. :)

    Lol my kinda jokes.

But to be on topic: focus is a simple math coefficient used to give different weights in functions.

Example: casting a spell while wearing plate armor would cost more focus than wearing cloth.

Cool downs can surve that purpose but would hide the coefficient thus creating the same math only we do not see it.
