I recently quit SOTA indefinitely. I don't really want to go into details in this post about why I quit the game. I have not played that game that much (I played R31 offline quite a bit and R32 and R33 online to adventurer level 51).

I would like to know why people enjoy SOTA? What has been your favorite experiences in the game so far? What have I perhaps missed out on?

I hope most of the answers are not about housing because I never got a house (the game never convinced me enough to spent that kind of money on the game or to spend that amount of time in the game to try and get a lottery ticket).

originally? because there was a glimmer of a chance that the developers would innovate and try something new & good, given they were not beholden to a large corporation.

Now? I play with my brother because he likes to play. Once Pantheon is out, or even in Alpha, we'll both likely switch to that. At least there, again, will be a glimmer of a chance that the developers will innovate and I will get to play an MMO that advances the 20+ year old genre before I die.

I was planning on being a crafter in shroud, but the whole gather 120 wood for one bow, or gather 300+ ore/cotton/leather + rares for one suit of armor, plus the punitive "random effect" and "random destruction" from masterworking and enchanting put that idea in the ground. :( It's not like I can't do it, it's that it's a second job, and it's not fun, currently.

Shroud was more fun during R10-R31 than R32 and R33, imho. I suspect this trend will continue until the game is devoid of players, if the past & present is any indication of their future designs & implementations.

Without any completed bug free quests, it is difficult to answer your question. I am very dissatisfied with the current game, but to be fair it has not been released yet. There have been so many radical changes since I have been playing that I would be hard put to forecast the end product at this point. I have been trying to level my character as best I can, and the challenge to me has been developing new strategies around every new nerf that has come out. It has been a real challenge, but with the recent changes to loot, I am stymied at the moment. Not having fun now, but willing to wait a bit. My favorite experience so far is a work in progress pertaining to gaining a little advantage with the COTO fiasco.

It was fun up until the latest loot nerf, which makes the game too much like a second job now.

Character building, combat, and exploring. I really enjoy the class less freedom of picking from whatver skills and then the progession path building up to that final character. I loved that about UO as well. And its working really well for me here- I can't wait to go home and eek out a few more points in this to to enable that. Also since I jacked my computer up to a full gaming rig, I've been enjoying the combat as well, where I use terrain and structres, acutally moving around a lot in combat (hey I'm light armor -I never stand still) . I'm also enjoying heading out and exploring the non cloned zones. It's easily filling the entire time I've allotted to gaming in my life currently. Having a blast despite that it's not baked. I'm waiting for all the crafting to be complete before really spending much time focused on that. I've also built a little PvP arena under my place where my friends and I practice killing each other as ultimately I see myslf taking part of the factions and PvP zones, or creating my own PvP storyline (come try to kill me and my friends under my place to win a prize). So I guess that last part was about housing, sorry ;)

your post made me think of something, what happens when the owner of a city, gets banned or just stops playing. what happens to the city?

I don't know if there has been any official stance put forth on this, but the easiest thing for the devs to do would be for them to set the permissions on the city to "Anyone can claim" and it would effectively become a PRT that you could use either Place Anywhere or POT Only Deeds in.

I keep hearing this statement but define released? I'd say they have released the game. It is persistent and can be bought through channels other games are brought from (Steam). What more is there to being released? Just a statement saying it's released? IMHO it is released and it was done way too early. The game is a grinder more so than most other MMOs, I do think the game is pretty to watch most of the time, and the community is very much a community which is impressive to say the least.

The game itself is more of a glorified graphical socialising system and less of a game. Giving you something to do while talking to others. Economy options are quite broken in all fronts unfortunately, but I think if you want enjoyment the easiest way is to interact with the community (even the SotA fanatics that say the game is amazing you just have to look at it this way) as they are all friendly and try to be helpful.

Best looking armour so far imho, they don't look toy like or unusable like many other MMO's.

This game has what I have NOT experienced in recent MMOs, no Class restriction, Skills developing as you USE them (left ESO because of this). No open world PVP attrition to be experienced or forced upon you after a certain level (looking at you BDO and AAge). I was deeply disappointed by ESO, Archage and Black Desert Online, as each touted themselves to something I sought for so many years, only to have my hopes dashed after paying to get into those Betas. To me (I never played UO) but this reminds of two games combined I had great hopes for that fell through the cracks NWN 2 and Pathfinder Online (that went sour quickly with OWpvp). I hold on, because there is no where else to go, I enjoy the Skill system, but am currently on strike from grinding for Gold. If I play, its mainly for resources so I can get better at carpentry for my Row house. And out fo the games I have mentioned this by far is the best community I have experienced !

I like the forum PvPing the most. People get to argue their point of view almost 24/7. It feels great to take a peek at the forum recent threads in the middle of the night and know that I have something to read during morning dog walk and bathroom time. You won't find many forums out there that have large pools of ideas and conflict.

The moderators have done a relatively good job when it comes to curb down toxic level when things start to get too personal, which give room for people to move on to next topics.

At the end of the day, this is just a game. Either you play or you don't. It's all good.

It isn't fun yet. Sort of a setting without the actual game. But I'm optimistic that they have big things planned.

I get the gist of what you mean here but it's not really correct. It may be a game for some but for others it's an investment (time and money) with an expected return via enjoyment. When you are heavily invested and don't get the return you get valid discontent.

But that's the risk you take with kickstarters. There's no guarantee promised of satisfaction. It's just an opportunity to invest in something you believe could be good.

I think it is the promises that keep me around. I am invested, as some have said. Once it is "released", if I am still not having fun, there will be a lot of tax free lots/vendors for sale.
