So I play a pure air mage and with the new changes to the 3 primary buffs it leaves us air mages with a skill that is wasted. That would be the Dex buff. Int. gives all mages including air mages more Focus, and Crit for spells as well Dmg vs What Dex offers. Even with the minor specialization that boosts Dex for chain lighting it makes no sense for us to us the Dex buff what so ever as we lose out on so much dmg.

I think it should be that Air Mages gets its boost from Dex only to make that buff usable if not its a complete waste unless you are mixing with a melee class or archer.

This needs to be looked into as its really sucks now that in order to maximize my over all attunement I have to invest in this skill that does nothing any more pure air mages other then waste xp.

    cheers,
    Gov. Xee

I think you air mages are in the same boat as earth mages. I can buff for an extra 30 strength and it only increases my stone fist damage by 1 point at the top end. Might as well remove the math completely and take the "bonus damage based on strength" out of the description.

I'm an Archer with Air mage specialisation and one of the reasons i took it was for the dex/critical hit buff but that's for a hybrid class and if you are pure Air Mage i can see the issues.

I think all Air spells should thus be influenced by dex and not int, but int is still needed for added focus amounts else it gets too complicated. To balance this then the damage bonus from dex should be massively boosted and effect all skills in the school. This will make hybrid melee/ranged Air builds useful and would make a class of Magic not really used by main stream int based mages, unique to the pure Air Mage.

I think the dex buff it pretty good. A lot of people use air as second mastery for their archery etc.
Air Mages also benefit from Int.

    Just mages dissapointed???

I'm a hybrid melee-dps using swords and some magic and am/was attempting to max out Strength of Earth, Enlightenment and Air's Embrace. As I could put these on the Utility Bar. I was pretty disappointed and baffled by why this has been done, especially given that it has previously been my choice should I wish to waste skill points and slots on buffs of marginal or arguable value, this freedom I saw as one of the games virtues.. Why was this enforced rather than left as a choice?

Can someone point me at the patch notes regarding this change and why it was made??

Unlearned Air Mastery. Around 20% fizzle chance while moving in full cloth wand and shield. No way to create an hybrid weapon+air with no fizzle also with lvl 100 focus Mastery.

What if Air specialization gave a 50% reduction in fizzle at 80 skill, and 75% at 100 skill?

@Antrax Artek That would mean that if you are not wearing a wand you would heave 35 % fizzle chance in full cloth armor + shield while moving (with a empty hand). So it would be way more if you are wearing a weapon + shield .....
    Is that what you mean?

@Xee Yeah the dex buff should be in the light armor tree instead (not in the air tree).

I want to second the notion that between Sun, Earth, and Air, the schools with statistic buffs, I think there's a big problem considering pure mages for those circle's. I think that something unique is in order.

Upon specialization, Earth and Air reverse the reliance upon Intelligence to the circle's respective statistics, Strength or Dex. Int will then become secondary in weight for damage. To balance the Focus traded away with letting Int go to raise Dex/Str, focus cost is lowered a marginal amount. This will allow less spells to be cast than with out specialization, but they will do more damage overall.

Sun, it's interesting, being not perfectly matched to Int thematically when opposed to Str/Dex, but regardless. Since there is not yet a lot of DPS possible with Sun (and Moon for that matter) but considering future additions to the circle: Upon specialization in Sun, some weighted ratio of Str-to-Int becomes important in all active spells' calculation for Sun. The idea could carry over to Moon and a Dex-to-Int weighted ratio. The lack of a meaningful Dex buff in the circle could be a built-in Dex bonus tied to the specialization skill, which still meshes with Air's Embrace.

I have just had really exciting thoughts about the possibilities of overlap between dual specializations between Air-Moon and Earth-Sun.

Really rough and incomplete, but seems a novel solution to Sun and Moon being odd ducks, and the other issue of pure Earth and Air mages beingbkinda screwed by the specialization.

Let me clarify with 2 screenshots:

    Full cloth+wand+shield
    [IMG]

    Full cloth+weapon

This means no way for a viable weapon+air hybrid build or air mage with shield.
Fizzle chance is really exaggerated, and i still cannot find a reason, who want lame spamming cl on control point can stand on place using plate too, so what I wonder is what's the point of this unbearable fizzle penalty of air magic while moving?
Air is the only school with such a high fizzle, ring of fire and death field (same tier as chainlighting) have 10% less fizzle chance without counting the 50% fizzle bonus of death specialization.

PS: Fizzle chance is really important in pvp and 20+% of fizzle is determinant in any fight vs player. Every failed attempt to cast a skill is time lost, and in the time lost someone can kill you easly.

Regarding the buff, you don't have to use the buff that is in your specialization tree. You can still use the Int buff as an Air Spec mage.

Dexterity does increase damage and stun length on most air spells, so it's still useful for that tree.

So wearing a shield alone while running would give you more than 35 % fizzle chance ?! That seems to be .... way way too much. I wonder if the devs are aware of this. Or maybe its intended ..... I know air magic is very powerfull in pvp but still ....

You should not forget that a free hand reduces fizzle by 10%. If you wear a shield you will not only add fizzle, you will also loose the 10% bonus. There is also a reduce fizzle chance skill in the focus tree.

On the QA it was possible to use a potion for the missing second buff. However, for Earth and Air training this buffs is only usefull for attunement.
If would like to see to uses at least two magical buffs, instead of potions + 1 magery buff.

Full cloth+weapon also with mastery focus and follow through level 100 you still have 20+% of fizzle chance, when i said no way i meant no way.

As air magic is meant to be used with melee schools, at least more so than other magic schools, it makes sense that there is a less fizzle chance with equipment than others, not more.

I play an air mage and considering I am the most mobile one on the playing field I find the high fizzle chance air has in balance with my very high versatility. Most people play with Heavy Armor chest as air mage... that ofc makes it fizzle more ;)

We were talking about full cloth users, it is well know that heavy armor users can lame air in pvm standing on place.
Air school has no versatility, it's the only school that force you to be a pure mage without shield precisely because of the high fizzle.

My school goes well with every combat school and has lot of attack spells on top... a little fizzle is really not damaging at all. Thats why most air mages play it with a chainmail chest even.
