I'm doing data analysis on LB Castle in EP2.

    https://sotawiki.net/sota/Lord_British's_Castle_(Invasion)

Teams (parties) and Solo people go into the Castle to see how far they get, and how fast they can go.
I've developed scripts to pull data (again locally, not automatically in the game) to see how far people get.

    Here is some sample data.

GOAL: A good "metric" would be try to have the smallest team reach Room 14 the fastest. I will work on some equations.

This will allow us to examine which rooms are most challenging.

People seem to get stuck after Room 5 ... solo and small groups anyway, or they get bored after 5-7 minutes.

What do you all think of this idea?

I can pull this data manually for experimentation. The DateTime is in UTC/ZULU. Subtract 5 hours and you have Central US (Austin, TX) time.

Reach me if you and your teams are interested in doing some Runs through Lord British's Castle and becoming the best team (or solo person) with the best times! I can work on gathering data.

I love data, and I think these are some good metrics to gather. What the data could mean is however subjective, but you can always ask us.

While I would find the data interesting to look at I would caution against drawing any conclusions from it as to which rooms are most challenging. Especially if you are only looking at last room completed and not whether or not a further room was attempted.

For example- at least 90% of the time I run LB Castle I stop after completing the Music Room. Does that mean the Laboratory is too hard for me? No, and looking at data you can see that if I start the Laboratory I complete it, and the same with the Library- I can very consistently clear those rooms solo. Why do I usually stop there? And why do I sometimes not stop there? Well because most of the time I go there I am in a loot collecting mood not a challenge mood. When I want a challenge I see if that is a day I can solo the Throne room (I could when it came out then I couldn't when it was made harder then I could when pet gear came out but then stats on pet gear were reduced, you get the theme but also depends on how many times I am willing to die and how many potions I am willing to use) If I am in a loot mood, especially when something has been added to the loot table recently, I know that by finishing the Music room I usually have all three encoded cards and all three keys to turn in on the way out. (but once in a while I have to do another room or two) And if I want to make potions I know that by finishing the Music room I can loot all that nice glassware in the Laboratory even if I don't fight that wave. And I know I have all the loot in the first two sets of chests but would need to put in a lot of effort and death risk to get to that last set.

I'm pretty sure other people have their own stopping points not just related to difficulty- repeatedly farming the first set of chests for instance. And I know I'm not going to try to do the final room I don't take the potions that I would need for it, so I might get through the rooms I do slower. Unless I feel like seeing how fast I can go that day.... So yeah looking at the data is interesting but you'd really need to limit the variables to make it meaningful. And sorry for the rambling anyone who made it to the end of that :)

I usually stop at the lab or music room because lately I am only passing through till I get the recipe by then at the latest. But must point out that speed getting to the end is not really relevant because some time is spent between rooms to loot, buff up, take a nature break, get some coffee and etc. There really is no point going to the last room as far as I can see. I would spend more time in this scene if it were not for the petrified zombies. I avoid any place in game with them because the fight is so boring and the loot is so bad.

Very, very good comments! Exactly what I seek to learn and help others learn as well.
    • Data is typically numbers (quantitative). Data is also observations and feedback (qualitative, like you are offering now).
    • Information is processed data to give relevance and usefulness.
    • Knowledge is where I seek to go: "meaning" from the information.
    • After we have knowledge, we can "draw conclusions, make predictions, and drive change".
    REF: https://seismic.com/blog/data-information-and-knowledge-whats-the-difference/

So yes, there's quite a ways to go with my Data Analysis efforts, even for a simple case of LB's Castle! I am not at the data science point yet but have to start somewhere. "Data science refers to the process of extracting clean information to formulate actionable insights." Ref: https://builtin.com/data-science

As you've pointed out, we must take into account players' goals and objectives when interpreting the information into knowledge, especially if we plan to make some data-driven decisions. Perfect! (I can see a SurveyMonkey in the makings here! I've done those before.)

It's clear that data will tell us when/where people stop, but not why.

I can gather and aggregate more data.
    • speed to the rooms (already did that)
    • number of items gathered
    • completion of the quest (cards and keys)
    • data from the vault
My intent is to look at these scenes and develop ideas not just for leaderboards (which is just aggregated and sorted data), but for perhaps competitions and exhibitions (which can bring in humans to make events). Again, people go to LB's Castle for different reasons. Understanding those reason can help us interpret the data into knowledge and perhaps create some fun competitions.

Perhaps (I'm just generating ideas here to focus the data layer a bit):
    • Throne Room Challenge (fastest to LB's Throne Room)
    • Gather Challenge (most or certain items gathered in a certain amount of time)
    • Solo Challenge (both of the above)
    • Quest Challenge (cards and keys)
    • Player Combat Challenge, er... Gladiator Challenge (includes flagged PVP players in the private party)
    • Vault Challenge (???)
And this is not always about being the best/fastest. It may also be simple "completing" the Challenge and being recognized anonymously or by name, or you know you did it!

Thanks! This is fun and quite a journey from Data to Challenges.

Interesting, here are new runs in LB's Castle since I posted the initial data.

One person (solo) made it to the Throne Room in 50 minutes. Others stopped along the way for probably various reasons.

I almost wish there was an optional query at the end of the scene, when people leave with something like:

    Why did you leave?
    • Completed the quest
    • Died and could not go further
    • Gathered loot that I needed
    • Got bored
    • ... more ...

Maybe by adding dialogue for the guard captain asking why they've abandoned the mission? Could be similar to the Oracle's daily test or when certain NPC's ask for the player's name, with a specific set of response keywords shown for that prompt.

Edit: I'm assuming when players complete the scene you wouldn't need to ask why they're leaving...

I don't know whether the existing system lets you tap into the responses but if you plan on doing this for a lot of other situations it might be worth adding that functionality.

I don't know whether you'd want to force players into conversation as some would find it tedious, maybe better to have the NPC "hail" the avatar and pose the question instead of their usual hello. Some players will want to turn in keys/cards anyway so you'd at least catch a few that way even if they're not specifically looking for the survey.

Be very careful about assuming people are bored. I haven't heard any complaints about the lb castle experience. It is one of my favorites to lead because a pickup group can do it with learning and effort.

I would be curious to see your analysis of the compendium data, and how you would interpret that. It took me many tries to beat the last three rooms solo, and at times I would have stated they each sucked. The reality was, I needed to learn and revise my approach.

@Winston Solo'd today if that helps. I still get turned around a lot and could have probably cut off a few minutes... last room is tough :-O

Definitely super fun if there was a leaderboard, though. I liked challenging myself and would be fun to keep trying to beat your own - or others - times.

I think its simply a matter of efficiency in some cases too, or reward not being worth the effort.

As with the Compendium, fighting your way to the first round of chests and then leaving/resetting/doing something else is a far more efficient way to farm scene specific loot than struggling to finish the whole thing. The way these scenes are set up, with "everyone must be in position at the circle to spawn the next wave" is a neat concept but one that grows more and more impractical the larger your party, as it can take longer for people to get into position which delays the whole thing . Particularly if people are off looking for loot bags with keycards and such.

This can be an irritating combination of circumstances and I would surmise part of the reason why you see so many solo runs through who probably bail after the first round of chests.

Be interesting to see the builds of the people who finish it too (even just the specialisation choices would give an idea). I know for example that finishing this is a massively painful exercise for my main character (magic user) but playing it with a tamer is a walk in the park. Might be an informative way to balance some of the content, since crazy magic resistance is making more and more content in the game inaccessible to magic-reliant builds.

In LB castle, "nuisance mobs" like the obsidian golem pretty much put a hard stop to anyone relying on any sort of magic - this isn't because its challenging, but rather because its nearly impossible for a caster to deal with one of these in a manner that doesn't involve tedious kiting/runabout or relying on changing to a weapon setup or pulling out a pet just for that fight. Unlike most scenes, were troublesome nuisance mobs can be skirted around or avoided, in LB castle you have no choice but to fight these to progress, which is enough to make me completely avoid going unless I'm with teammates I know can deal with it.

    Great points!
    • Choices between Speed, Quest items, and Party Size. Choices on personal goals (speed or loot).
    • Builds on players who can Solo or use small Parties to complete 14 rooms (if they reveal their builds ... would be fun to see a Twitch Livestream someday on this with clues and hints).
    • "nuisance mobs" - I guess to get through these involves player/party tactics (summon a pet, have more people in the party, whatever works best).

    Great information, thanks!

@Winston Guessing that 2nd solo that almost succeeded was me above. Failed the first night I tried which matches that day Was running perfect till I made a mistake to take pet off stay to follow. Then choked the rest of the night. But did it today/ Solo'd though died the first try on last room. Did succeed on the 2nd try.

I guess the reason I wanted to do it was see if I still can. It is a challenge to complete.

If rewards were more substantial, I would probably do this more often.

Leader board does give me further reason to attempt...as is, I know can improve time (had a death...need to do a perfect run next time)

After that I need to level up and possibly adjust build to compete with other peeps who can solo .

Then maybe I can get to the top of the leader board.

I am returning to the LB Castle leaderboard more this weekend. I pulled this data since about the last time I ran the query with an hour overlap:

Also, why am I doing this? The data queries to do this are very interesting and processing is a bit complex (I'm programming complex nested loops and looking for edge-cases that cause errors ... so fun ... and frustrating! Better than playing Sudoku for me.).

I learn by doing, then share results that we can use to have fun! That's my design cycle.

Keep track of your "run" date time and convert to UTC (lots of online converters from your time zone). Find your best times until I can give everyone some random names for the month, like I do on the Fishing Tournament and Treasure Hunt.

Is this a data error or reality? Lots of people finish the Shipping area (Room 5), but die in the Kitchen (Room 6). I don't remember if we talked about this before. Monsters too tough? Enough loot found and bail out? Food is too distracting in the kitchen (yum!)?

Are you sure they are dying in the kitchen or just not attempting it. In between those rooms is the first set of chests. Players trying to get the special loot that can appear in any of the three sets of chests will often stop after the first or second set if they can't easily make it to the next set in order to farm that particular loot.

Good point! That's what I want to look for in the data (another deeper level of query and analytics). Did people LeaveScene after Room 5, or experience DeathByMonster. I think I can aggregate that perhaps for each Room too.

    Thanks!

Death doesn't force people to leave, I have a few times died and resurrected at the ankh and continued fighting if I believe a room is doable and I just made a mistake... so there may be some correlation between death and leaving the scene but even in those cases dying may not be the sole/main motivator.

Are you able to see who goes into the vault afterwards? Can probably associate title based on if they raid the vault or not.

Nvr gone in...so not sure what is there. Nvr took the virtue hit.

Finally...perfect run. Not sure if I can shave any more time off (besides through leveling up and increasing skill levels). So guess what time you have for me is gonna be my best time for awhile.

    Was fun.
