I played a certain UO freeshard which had poker enabled and I must say that I enjoyed gambling with other players. I feel poker may be a stretch but I can't help but wonder if there is advancement on the old cup and dice. I would like the game to facilitate player to player gambling. To be more specific I'd like to see the game mechanics support it in a way that ensures the winner of the game always gets the the reward. Anyone have any thoughts or objections to something like this?
Easy enough to do with an NPC dealer, which could even be a "gaming table" if you don't want to have the humanoid NPC explicitly visible. The unknowns are: will the desired ESRB rating permit it, and/or is it part of the lore, story, or desired player behavior?
You raise some valid points. To add to me previous post, I failed to mention that the "table" taking "cuts" from prize pools could be an effective goldsink.
As a general rule, you'd have to keep it under the table. If you supported it in game, many countries would consider it an illegal casino. So you’ll see games where people informally bet on /roll events but it’s not built into the games themselves as a mechanic.
I don't think that the ESRB would take too kindly to a game which promotes gambling to minors and slap an AO (Adults Only) rating on SOTA, which is something that the developers definitely do not want!
While you most definately have a valid point with the ESRB, I don't see the CoD series having difficulty finding younger players despite it's mature rating, for example.
If they make a tournament texas hold 'em game inside SotA..... oh god... that'll be the nail in my coffin. I'll probably wither away and die because i'll never leave my computer.
I would rather there be a system that takes care of all the betting for each round rather than everyone manually doing it by giving it to a "trusted" person.
I'm thinking an in game casino/tavern, maybe in one of the larger towns. It would be a great hang out for socializing and a great place for all of us "adult" players. As for children gambling issues..... REALLY? Murder is illegal too but most of the games we sell to kids involve killing other players and NPC's... I think the least of our problems is teaching them how to play cards... which IS legal. It's fake killing, fake gambling and fake money.... it's just a game.
I am an avid poker player myself, but flip poker off in New Britania. I would like to see Richard Garriott come up with some sort of "New Britania" themed gambling games. I want to see things like runic dice, Some sort of tarot style card games, drinking competition mini games in the taverns, fishing competitions, horse races, jousting, duels etc etc. Being able to wager gold on these sorts of things would add another level of depth to this game.
