The maps in the game are very poor. I managed to turn on the English subtitles for the World Map, surely that should be on by default? which helped a lot to start with. Once you get to somewhere the size of Ardoris and you have to try to actually locate people in this place, it's no longer is fun, or anything closely resembling it. They have pointers, pointing out specific places, but are written in gibberish, so are all but useless. Please rectify Devs.
Runic and needing to actually explore are hallmarks of Lord British games, which is why I asked. If you're looking for someone in a town, try asking a guard about them.
Sorry for being so short, just a bit annoyed with running around and having to tab out to find where to go, in this day and age. I don't want golden exclamation marks on heads, but place names would be nice. It's a map. That's how they work.
An advanced geospatial location service based on aetheric power and lunar table(t)s is planned for Ep2. I have heard rumors from unreliable sources that voice dictations for directions ("turn right from next corner, walk two blocks and turn left..") will be performed by LB himself. Seriously though, it never ceases to amaze me how folks who were apparently not born yet in 1990 depict it as some kind of stone age. What the game actually needs, is some kind of "1990 mode" (bit like, say, Bioshock Infinite has a '1999 mode'), with all the crutches removed. Even chats would be in runic
FYI The current mini maps in game is a first draft. So their pixelation for instance is poor. After all the scenes are finished they will make new mini maps. However the runic is there to stay. But two features they have talked about which you will like is annotation an cartography skill. Now annotation might come in q1 next year. Then you can enter your own notes as a layer in the map. Cartography skill might come with Episode 2. In that you can make your own maps as you go along. Such maps can then be sold. So then we'll get better maps as annotated by other players. Happy hunting Spoon
Maps existed pre 1990. I had one in my car so that I could find my way around and all the places names were in English plus there were road signs.
Maps exist in SotA. The point of contention here is whether or not in-game maps should have runic, forcing players to learn runic they want to use those maps. Having to read runic is a hallmark of Lord British games. If you're not willing to do that, there are external tools like sotamap.com
In game world map that fills in as I explore please. The sotamap interactive one is excellent, but I cant open it at the same time as running SOTA. Without access to the online map I struggle to imagine anyone exploring very far without getting hopelessly lost at least the first dozen times. Realism is nice, but a realistic experience of being lost in the wilderness isnt as much fun as getting to your destination.
Just thought I'd add this as it resolved most of my problems. http://www.sotamap.com/ Thanks for the replies. I look forward to seeing the updates.
