Indeed, trust is very important. I think that's part of the question in a sense. Would you and could you trust a player to run a casino fairly and without greed? I think I could fill that position. However, it's quite an investment to make. I want to make sure there is some interest in the community when it comes to gambling and the trust behind it. Although, my vision of a casino in SOTA places a lot of the decision making on the patron rather than the house (emote dice rolls, etc..) - thus removing some areas of concern.

alot of variables to this. Some states and countries do not allow gambling in video games.

Likely not... Too many variables, lack of control, and required level of trust.

This especially with RMT and pretty much anything being able to be converted for real cash. Even things like the deed lotto can stand on some shaky legal grounds.

Not to mention you can't verify every avatar is of legal age to gamble. Look at all the fuss going on currently with loot boxes.

Be very careful how you go about doing this. With new gambling laws, and old depending on where you live you could actually be sued IRL. Any casino including online, or in game is a dangerous game to play. Just say'n

I know for example where I live in Canada, ALL Gambling is controlled by one government body, and if caught ONLINE or IRL gambling without the government getting a cut, you can get deep in the poop

A lot of player ingame run things like that worked in different games in the interwebz.
Plus i don't mind a little scandal here and there. Adds flavour to the sandbox.
    I would be in!

Im in the US, and i play a lot of online fake money casino games, i would say your pretty safe doing that as long as real money is not in play. Its no different than betting on players in a tournament with gold pieces, and its fun to do when just watching matches.

heres something i came across that may help with the worries..........

The present trend of judicial case laws relating to in game virtual currencies at least in the USA tend to suggest that the laws of real gambling do not apply to them. In one of the first cases to come before the courts, in 2015, a player of the “massively multiplayer online game” ‘GoW’ alleged that she had lost real money through the use of an online casino within the game. The game allowed users to purchase a virtual currency through the use of real money. The virtual currency could only be used within the game and could not be ever redeemed into real money. The Maryland court dealing with this issued differentiated between real and virtual money and stated that the game was a not a casino or slot machine. The court also stated that there was no real dollar value attached to the in game items. The court here sought to ignore the market of gaming accounts which were sold outside for real money. Similar orders were also passed in three other similar cases which sought to equate in game virtual rewards to monetary value.

These judgements tend to suggest that unless the virtual currency used in the game allows for a change into real world items or legal currency, in game virtual currencies would not be covered under gambling. The situation is however not uniform across the globe and jurisdictions are only now modifying laws or laying down new laws on the subject.

I wonder if you could try and implement some kind of third party crossover app. For example one player who is the dealer and takes all the gold into an escrow and then the players load the 3rd party app with the croupier who holds the money setting up the seating for the players. So the players in SOTA sit down and roleplay at a table in a game while also playing in another window the 3rd-party poker app. Once the winner is determined the croupier pays him the COTOs (or IGG) taking a cut of the profit for his time and effort. I would imagine it could be done, but would take a lot of organising to work it all out properly

Honestly you don't even need an app for that.
A trustworthy 3rd ingame party would be enough.
@Savetti2 i am offering my service as 3rd pary mediator for transfers n'stuff ^^

In general I think it's just a bad idea, and should probably just be banned unless they created some kind in game system to support it. Creates too many headaches for customer support.

Do it. If the crafting system is legal then there shouldn't be any problems with your casino.

We toyed with an idea like this in the past, but felt there were too many limitations regarding lot permissions, prizes, etc. that essentially a lot of the 'functionality' of a casino would rely on trusting whoever was hosting it, or relying on the /roll system in chat or some other tedious/onerous mechanism. How exactly would you simulate a roulette table, a blackjack game, using in-game means? Without resorting to requiring external streaming or something it just seemed more or less impractical. I suppose you could have people standing around doing /roll 11 to pick a card and then /roll 11 again to 'hit' but the whole concept of deck odds etc. goes out the window. I guess I'd say I'm interested, depending on how things were set up.

In FFXI there was a /roll which gave a 0-999 result. What passed for a "casino" was simply thresholds which paybacks, so like 900+ gets you a little, 950+ gives you a bit more, 999 the most. And of course those numbers can be (and were) easily selected for whatever house pc you want, aka a tax on people who don't understand math. They were officially banned, but with a game that simple, you had to be really dumb to participate in the first place.

A fight pit where where summoned creatures could fight or race around a track would be fun to bet on.
