The game works great up until it doesn't. Using the Linux runtime called sniper it crashes after a few mins of playing hardlocked. If you use proton 7.03 it crashes to desktop in the same time on lowest setting or high settings. Not sure how to help troubleshoot this but man having a portable SOTA for 3 minutes even was amazing. Tell me how to help troubleshoot this and I will. I'd love a portable SOTA even at lowest settings. I can't wait to try it again after the move to new unity version. If anyone else has had better luck let me know.
Granted, my use was very minimal (default settings on both the Steam Deck and in SotA, plus I was only mining in the bottom of Graff Gem Mines (a small scene with low vis area), but I didn't experience any issues as you describe. I'm only using stable builds on my Steam Deck, and also I am very much not attempting to tweak anything for fear of having experiences like you have noted above.
I was able to fish in BlackRock cove... Very full of deco town. Lots of water for 75 mins with no crashing. Later on in bluerose isle for 45 mins. No crashing. I clocked the GPU down a bit like down to 1400 or so and it's all good. Mobile SOTA... Beautiful.
Yes as stated . Sniper is the latest stable Linux steam runtime. The game works good as stated in my second post. Reducing the GPU speed a tiny bit has it running like a top. Total logged time on the deck is now over two hours.
It was not overheating. SOTA just thinks the whole gpu was for IT and IT only. Keep in mind this guy will run hot on certain games. I have a feeling it just turbo's up when you allow it 100%. Should be interesting to see other folks give it a go. I'm hoping an updated unity build might see better performance.
Out of curiosity, what are folks initial impressions. Favorable? Unfavorable? Why this over say, a low-end gaming laptop, that is comprable in price? I recognize the portability of the thing, but what good does that do you if you don't have a wireless internet connection on the go? I am guessing (maybe wrongly) that folks just play most of their Steam games in offline mode then? Or do y'all prefer playing on this thing at home over say, a desktop/laptop? Cheers!
Was it specifically stated by Catnip Games that this is or will be a supported platform? That I don’t recall.
SotA's playability on Steam Deck is not in our control, we were not contacted or consulted with reference to Shroud of the Avatar's inclusion on the platform, and issues playing while using Steam Deck should be directed to Steam/Valve. We do not have any plans at this time for the Steam Deck to be supported as an official SotA play platform. With that said, we hope that Steam is successful in their efforts, as not only will this benefit our game's visibility but other's as well.
There are comparable laptops in that price range? I personally see Steam Deck as an alternative to the very closed gaming consoles.
So my steam deck arrived, sota download and installed, within 30 mins I was in the Rise killing nicely, very impressed overall sota works well on on the device, does take about 60 seconds to swap scene but once in runs very smoothly, swapped graphics to fastest setting. Hopefully save a bit of battery that way, performance wise its great.
How do other games play on the Steam Deck (like Dragon Age Inquisition, Jedi: Fallen Order, Baldur's Gate 3, etc)?
They said it was supported by Linux ... this is literally Linux. If I recall correctly it's arch linux. It's not some mysterious closed source console. One of the reasons I leaned so heavily into sota was their support for Linux.
