I could totally be missing something.

With all the changes to housing permission system, one thing I'm failing to understand is why a random player,
with no affiliation whatsoever to my property, can open and rummage through every single box.

They can't -take- anything, but I don't really think its necessary to have the general public able to go through everyone's things.

There doesn't seem to be any way to avoid this, as its the 'default' setting - claim a lot, put down a box, whole world can look in it.

I can't even set this container to private, I can only change remove/modify but not visibility?

Even if making everything private on my lot would fix this (which it doesn't seem like it would) - then you lose the entire shared/co owner container permission.

In the past, if you didn't have permission to be in a container, then you didn't even have the ability to open it. I see no way to achieve this in this new system short of trying to find a room to put it in and lock the door.

Twice now I've had people message me saying they can get into my boxes ....they can't actually take anything, but its a bit confusing.

    Am I missing something?

Yeah @Tailz brought this up to me a few days ago I think he did bug it too.

You would have to put your stuff in a house with locked doors to avoid this right now.

Glad to know its not just me and that I've not missed some obvious setting somewhere.
I found the tickbox to keep people from moving my hedges around at least, that was making me nuts.

They do need to rethink this.
Soon we’ll all have to put our houses into magic movers every night before we log out. :(
How deserted will towns look then :(

@Boris Mondragon (I think) said it best on another thread...

Were one bug away from total exploitation, theft, and complete pandemonium.

Get it inside and lock your doors...

Yeah I mean its not like any of my stuff is 'secret' but I just don't think its anyone's business how many ingots I've got in my ingot box or what sort of extra gear I've got in my closet.

Next thing you know it will be random guy I've never met saying ...hey, you have that Wand in the wardrobe at your house are you not using it? Do you wanna sell it? Or...hey, can you craft me something and I say "bring me the materials" and they're like but you have the materials and then I say, "yes but I don't have the beetles to use for random person's crafting request" and they're like...but you have 10,000 beetles in your "Save the Beetles!" box and I can say yes but those beetles are my friends, I've NAMED them ! Or maybe I don't want Scoffer coming and rummaging through all my boxes trying to find out where I've hidden his birthday present or, seeing exactly how many addon store perfume bottles I have bought since then he will yell at me. I can just see it now ...HONEY, DO YOU CARE TO EXPLAIN WHY YOU HAVE PURCHASED 42 FANCY VASES? This permission thing could ruin my marriage!!

Security concerns such as you point out, @Duke Ezekiel Cooper are a whole 'nother matter. It makes me nervous for sure.

Yea... And it happens JUST like that too...
My woman went rummaging through my boxes yesterday...

She looked across the room and was like,
"So... I just found that $1000.00 that you said you deposited in the bank a year ago."
    "Go to the camper!"
    "NOW!"

    I was like,
"Honey, I did deposit the $1000.00 like I told you..."
"I just didn't say anything about the $50.00 withdrawals from time to time."

    She was like,
    "I SAID OUT MFER!!! OUT!!!"

    :)

My shop in Britt Mart is packed up until this bug is fixed. I have no doors to lock on a crafting pavilion.

2 story basement. Lock the doors that go to lower level.

Maybe walking into an unlocked house and opening an unlocked cabinet for a peek is an immersion feature? :D

Seems kind of pointless if you can't sniff anything, though. What's the point of creeping if you can't sniff?

At any rate, since we can't lock our containers, we are surely dependent on permissions, so those shouldn't be so limited.

Surely this will be fixed soon :)

I think it's funny that people are so up in arms over others being able to look in their containers (just like in real life) but people also don't seem to be concerned about their digital privacy (i.e. Facebook, Google, etc).

I guess this is now the perfect time to implement a locked chest mechanic into the game.....

BTW, if you really want to hide items then put them in a nested container. Lookyloos can't open nested containers.

Here is something I have done in the past.
Put all of your things in your basement...

    THEN...

    Remove the basement hatch.

No one (not even you) can get to them without the lot owner (YOU) putting a hatch down.

    FWIW

they can't open them, but they can screw with the nesting and THEN look.
