Thanks for answering djshire. Still not getting this--instead of poking around, I used the recipe in the email. So for example, a hilt is supposed to be:
    • Iron Hilt (Blacksmith) – 1 Smithing Hammer, 1 Chunk of Coal, 2 Iron Ingots
No matter how many times I try, 1 smithing hammer, 1 chunk of coal, and 2 iron ingots won't light up the crafting bar. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.

Amounts have to be exact, and make sure nothing from your inventory is on the crafting station but what you need for the crafting.

amounts need to be correct and there is 2 tables... one is smelting and the other black smithing(?) the right tools, the right ingredients, the right table.... yeah I will wait till people post recipes because I'm not sitting there randomly trying 1 of this 1 of that till the button lights up. And I really hope they fix the needing 2 hands to move around. Its annoying

Try adding one piece of coal to your mix.

I could never forget the old gals...they hand me my teeth out of the cleaning jar when I get up in the morning. How would I eat my grits otherwise?

I wish this was the case! :D
There are several key rules that once you figure out you need coal for a lot of smelting processes, figure out the right tool (like tongs for smelting), and just try out different combinations, for bar mold you need tongs, a chunk of coal, and I think 4 iron ores... then you make a load of bars and start experimeting with them... it's fun, altough I'm pretty sure there will be a clearer system later on, with more hints and information.

Aha! I didn't realize there was a separate blacksmithing table--I was trying to make a hilt at the smelting table. Thanks!
