Ok big question to all of you. Should there be ways to gamble gold in SotA? Or should this not be implemented at all? I myself would really enjoy it if there was a real deep gambling option in the game where you can pretty much make your home into a casino where players can all sit at tables and stuff and play cards, dice, roulette with their gold made in game. Of course, there would be no real money transactions. And of course, there'd be no dice loading or anything like that. I just remember in UO there were die cups and you could roll it and get numbers. Pretty much all it did, but some players used it to gamble with each other. Of course, one could easily recall away if they lost, which pretty much meant you had to gamble with someone you could trust to pay up if they lost.
I think this would be really really easy to have in the game, and it would be cool. Though, im sure some may argue it wouldn't fit the setting because im not sure if gambling existed round the middle ages, I know nothing of the history of gambling in fact all I can do is picture a bunch of italian people living in the east coast back 80 years ago when I think of "history of gambling", either that or I think of the "wild west" with a bunch of people/cowboys sitting in a saloon or whatever and gamblin away.
If any of you ever played red dead redemption there was a pretty nice gambling system to this game. you sat down at a table with other players, which im guessing were all NPC's, I mainly watched my bro play it. It was really realistic looking. When I saw this im thinking it would be real cool if all the "people" in the saloon were real players.
But yea, once again im not sure if it would fit the setting, I doubt a bunch of people in the middle ages gathered around tables at bars and stuff and played dice, cards, roulette to gamble their gold. And there surely werent any slot machines.

    I would love a casino!

I used to play a UO freeshard with texas hold em games on the roof of britain bank. My god that was fun.

Texas hold em might be out of the question, but I think some kind of gambling would be brilliant!

I don't know about a deep system, but something simple like a roulette table would be cool for fools who want to loose their in game gold.

My memory is fuzzy, but wasn't there something along these lines in Buccaneer's Den, u6 or 7?

I would love to set up a casino room in my house. I remember that from EQ2 but the stuff was not really functional...I love to gamble...Hopefully they can make it functional as a gold sink :)

Yes, a little "off the top" for taxation purposes. Or perhaps to bribe the local constabulary in the case of areas outside the reach of the Crown. :)

What about a raffle or a lottery system in addition to these ideas?

Lotteries are small purchases. People who don't usually like the risk involved in gambling may actually play the lottery because they figure if the rare chance they get the grand prize they just made a fortune.

Another good thing about a lottery is that even though it is a small fee to purchase an entry lots of people will be purchasing them over and over again. So if say 50% of the people even played the lottery that would be a huge gold sink across the board from numerous individuals. Make it at least one purchase per drawing (or more), and just keep letting the pot build up until somebody buys a winning ticket. Even though the winner just became wealthy it still took probably double the jackpot or more out of the economy as a gold sink. (I'm assuming the pot increase is half the amount of gold of each ticket purchase [rounded down], and applied after each drawing where there was no grand prize winner)

Personally I won't gamble unless it's a game like Texas Hold'em where you are playing against other players, and the house only takes a small fee from each pot. Other than that I don't like games of luck because the odds are always on the house. However I would play a lottery, and it is a reason to do something quick and log on every few days or so even if it is a busy week and cannot play long.

Also Unclaimed tickets eventually lose their winnings if they don't claim it in a certain period of time... even more of a gold sink.

So I think both casino games, and lottery games should exist to reach a broader spectrum of players. It's a good gold sink.

ADDITIONALLY: I would also love a system that just allows us to play simple games of chance like rolling dice against other players. Winner takes pot, but the game world takes a fee from the pot each time so it acts as a sink. (role playing terms the gold sink is the fee for the casino). However if we play against other players we can bet really high if we are rich. Rich players should have the option to bet higher because winning 25 gold per pull of the slot machine isn't so fun for somebody who as 25million gold.

There definitely was gambling in the middle ages - check out a couple of articles here and here, I'm sure there are dozens more. :)

It wouldn't bother me personally if they put some form of gambling into the game, and it would add some variety and flavour. The thing to consider is are they going for a family-friendly rating with the game, and would adding gambling mean they'd have to have a more mature rating? If it makes no difference to the rating then go for it!
