I wanted to see the split between those that have never heard of the game from those who have but never played it.

Played UO from 07-00 and just recently picked it up again :) Such an amazing game and changed so much of the industry.

I played from July 1997 (beta) to Sept 2002 and quit exactly on the 5th anniversary. Surprised that I even stuck it out that long though. UO was my first MMO and I didn't have a clue as to what to expect from the game.
Because I played the single player Ultima games since the 80's, I was expecting something similar where I was the hero following some story except that I would see other people in the game. I ultimately left the game because it was clear to me that it wasn't evolving beyond the concept of a pure open sandbox game. SOTA is the game that promises to be what I originally expected UO to be, hence the reason why I backed this project up. A multiplayer environment where interacting with the NPCs gives a sense that they are real people with real lives. To be able to follow through on a story within a game while still being able to interact with other players ( or go at it solo ). To be able to do other things such as crafting, adventuring, social interactions, etc. while waiting for the next chapter in the story to be rolled out.

I hope that answers the OPs question.

Ordered UO on Amazon.co.uk 6 months before I had an internet connection.
Started playing in 1999 on Europa and stopped about 4 years later. By that time people were growing plants, the first 3d engine was available and I got fed up with the Asian inspired stuff that came into the game. That pretty much killed the game for me.

Same here. "UO" from AoS to today is called UO but isnt anything like UO pre-AoS. It is way closer to a WoW game today. No risk vs reward and item PvP.

Played UO on Europa a few years, on and off. While I liked it very much, the real love in online gaming for me was Dark age of Camelot.

Played from 1998 till about 1.5 years ago. Started on Baja and had characters on most all shards including Siege Perilous. Eventually migrated to Atlantic with just about everyone else and stopped playing after 3 longtime friends got hacked, lost everything, and left. It was a long, fun run and I made many good friends which I still keep in touch with! UO will always be one of my favorite games!

I started playing UO a week or two after it was launched. Played for almost 8 years. I'll always remember my first interaction with a real online person that I met in the city of Britain.

Me: "Hi, I'm new to this game and I am wondering if you can help direct me in what I should first do?"
Stranger: "Sure, I would be happy to help you get on your way."
    Stranger: "Follow me."
<Following stranger thru the city streets>
Me: "Thank you so much. I really don't know where to begin or what I should do."
<Entering wooded area just outside of Britain>
    Stranger: "We're almost there."
    Me: "Okay."
Chat window: "You are being attacked!"
Chat window: "You are being attacked!"
Chat window: "You are being attacked!"
    Chat window: "You are dead!"
    <I turned into a ghost>
Stranger: "Rule #1, never trust anyone."
    :(

This poll, like most polls, isn't giving you an accurate cross-section. People who never played UO or who hadn't heard of it, are much less likely to even open the thread, much less vote.

Well also I clicked "no" because I only had dabbled into it, but obviously I had heard of it - I assumed the third option was Never Heard of It.

I feel it's hard to believe anyone could be on this forum and use it but not have heard of UO due to it this game being a "spiritual successor" and many threads referencing it.

    97 - 2000, Pacific

Couldn't stand Trammel / Felucia so went to EQ, Torvonnilous

Once EQ added instances (so everyone can play!!), I went to WoW and that is just a horrible time-waster. Haven't been involved in a MMO for a while now.

97 was the peak and it's been going downhill ever since. More restrictions, less challenges and consequence, and greater player protections have increasingly watered down the experience.

Bought UO in 1997 for Christmas for my son. He roped me into playing in early 1998. I played until 2008, and he'd quit long, long before that. lol

Met my current husband in UO - he was in Germany, me in the US. This is one of the main reasons we early-backed SotA. We spent hours, almost daily, playing UO together while thousands of miles apart.
