It is the perfect blend of observation use of concentration and happenstance. Sometimes you get a Lucy glyph set ...sometimes you don't. I have found ways ...or a way...what with training on my part that enables glyph keys and movement. It really takes all you have got...being able to see what is going on in the game...on the combat bar...and being in the correct position to fight. I am so happy that the twitchy little keyboard specialists and macro heads lose their unfair advantage. Yay. Finally a chance to duel someone that is not running in tight circles changing direction and jumping at the same time. They are too busy with looking at the game. Ignore what the game has to offer...and lose one half of your ability to play. Ha. How sweet it is Alice.

there is no skill with the card system. more about.. luck of the draw.. why not just have the two people dueling meet in the center of the arena , flip a coin, and whoever wins the toss is the victor.. better yet.. just have a paper rock scissors menu pop up and they can fight that way.

It's been proven by the dev's that the card system is based on skill, more so than most MMOs - we've seen examples of more skillful players even beating players of much higher level. You can only do this when there's strategy/skill involved. You would never see that in most MMOs with their fixed skills buttons (Macro anyone?) since higher level characters just spam their favourite skills and clean up lower level players, no matter how 'un-skillful' the higher level player is.

Captain Jack just wants to be clear here. The skill you are atalking about is deck building, is it not? Not combat controls or in combat strategy really, just building the proper deck to do get the job done.

There's a number of strategies in combat (even in it's very unbalanced alpha form):

    1. Build/equip a deck appropriate for the situation based on the skills/equipment you have - so you need to plan ahead where possible, that's the pre-fight strategy.

    2. During the battle, you will need to use skill to stack your skills as they come up, to reduce focus use. Same goes for creating special combos. It takes skill to do this, because your opponent will likely be moving to try to get behind you so you have to stay active on the controls as you do this.

Also, during the fight you need to use skills in a timely manner - e.g. time your use of heals, if one comes into your hand, will you play the odds of it coming up again when you need it or use it now to be sure? Same for other skills.

I like to move during a fight, stepping (dodging) to make sure my opponent has to stay active with his mouse and keyboard to keep facing me.

It's also about recognising your opponents strengths and weaknesses and using skills to match - are stuns not working? Perhaps they have resistance, use other skills instead.

They still have a way to go to build in the full skill of hte system - the defensive skills are a bit under-powered but they said on one of the videos they are working to balance that.

In my opinion, the deck system require skill and intelligence because you must take the best your deck is offering to you at a given time/situation (intelligence for planing, skill to execute).

I still beleive the deck system needs more tweaking. I'd love to see the option of more glyphs on screen....maybe up to 15. I could also love to see a better situation for combos...maybe reserved space where combo glyphs appear if they are possible. I think only being able to take a skill up to 5 cards isn't that great, I'd like to see this increased also.

Along the lines of what Invidia says above, for combos, there could be a mini-deck next to the main deck in which possible combos appear automatically.

I really like the idea of a separate bar that appear when a combo is ready for use above the actual glyph bar. If there are not disponible combo glyphs the the bar could fade out.

How about having separate rotations for Offensive and Defensive glyphs? I don't know if it'd be too complicated, but it'd remove a lot of situations where you need to go offensive and get defensive glyphs and vice versa.

Isn't that what a lot of people said about the uo combat system, that it was like rock paper scissor...

warriors pre trammel maybe... but UO is the best PvP in an MMO I have experienced, simple enough for anyone to attend it but very challenging to master; the work of a genius probably not knowing it at that time (and appearently still not knowing...)

Obviously you do not know Medieval history! This is how the fighting went down back then: A referee held a bunch of cards in his hand and threw a couple at each contestant. The cards you picked up were the moves u were allowed to execute. Since the people back then were more stupid as we are today, they only knew how to hold so many cards (3-9) thats why the limitation. For people in heavy armour it was even harder to pick the cards up so some were damaged in the process and thats what they called a "Slug" card.
It all makes really good sense to me thats why we should keep the card system its just logical!

Lol now you're just being silly.. I was beating level 50's-60 at level 25-30 and that's using a locked deck with 50% more focus.. It doesn't take more skill to use a rotating deck, it's just luck of the draw. Like the previous poster said, get in a dueling arena, and flip a coin.... Thats the current system.

Well, I can't speak to PvP, haven't done it since the first 2-3 years of UO.

What I can say, I'm using the deck......remembering I stopped leveling at 32.....and it does require skill. As an archer, I have to know my shots, I have to keep moving, I have to stack skills, heal when necessary, and again, keep moving. I have to dodge trees and logs that come outta nowhere as I'm trying to keep out melee range. I gotta keep firing, keep moving, gotta drop slugs outta my deck as well. So, if you're saying it doesn't take skill on my part, in building my deck and executing the use of what comes up, doing all the things above and more that I haven't mentioned......lol, naive warriors. Are the Warriors who are saying its luck of the draw...are you saying that your wins were just luck, no skill involved for a warrior? I meant a few warriors, their play style is NOT dependent on luck.

I'm not saying, not in the least am I saying, it's all roses with using a deck, it ain't. I like most of Duke Invidias deck ideas. Control over size, maybe being able to add a couple more of a few skills, just make it expensive and limit it to only a few skills per tree.....maybe....and the others from other posts.

To me, I didn't use any combos in R11 but tried testing them a bit, that was my mistake, but when I decided to try some, of course it was an hour before I hit the sack the night before shutdown. The mechanism for using a combo is cumbersome, too cumbersome IMHO. I don't agree with making it so simple that you don't have to do anything, just watch for your combo glyph to pop up. I think there has to be a happier medium than making it too cumbersome vs too easy. If we were to give combos their own bar, maybe make the cool down after use, on combos, or the ability to use a combo, or maybe even on those two glyphs that made up the combo, a lot longer? Then combos would be used as kind of a kill shot, or a run for your life shot. Someone having the ability to use multiple combos back to back just seems.....wrong to me. Not sure how else to put it. Make the use of combos something that requires thought, not just going..."oh look a more powerful glyph, I gotta use it, gotta gotta gotta....another one, whoppeeeee".

I know I am fighting a loosing battle here, or should I say, already lost
but please get rid of the deck system. I have heard all the arguments about
it involving skill, but, I just don't see it, skill or not, it isn't the issue
it is just a terrible way to do things. but, Lets pretend for a moment that
there is some skill required. This system is so much worse than the traditional
way we use skill in MMO's. If the reason we are keeping the "deck" system, is
because we do not want it like tradition gaming, then why not come up with
something else entirely, Anything would be better than this current system. Seriously,
the idea of not being able to use a specific skill that I had trained in and is
a huge part of my defense or offense until I am told I can do so, is so ridiculous.
I understand that skills can be locked and used with a cool-down, but, they end up
costing so much more focus and you have to pump points into the focus tree lowering
that cost at the expense of having less points to put else-where that are needed.
This is just my opinion and I am sure people dislike the traditional ways as much
as I dislike the deck system. I really doubt there will be a compromise or a change
but, I can hope and pray. We have the opportunity to be apart of the greatest game
ever created and everything was on track until this deck system showed its ugly head.
and now we have an xp system furthering the games demise.
but I am just one backer. and these are my opinions , and that's all they are,
opinions.. I do not want to hurt anyone's feelings or tell the Dev's that they are doing
a terrible job, because, they are not. The game is amazing, and if we can straiten out
a few minor issues, (deck system, xp) then we will be back on track with creating the
greatest game ever made. Either way, I am happy to have been apart of it and appreciate
all the hard work put into the game.

Thank you for all your hard work, I will continue to be
a huge fan and supporter, Long Live SOTA!!
