I was just thinking if we go to a darker look in game it would be even more appealing?! example Batman to Dark Knight! The darker things are, the better things get like houses, spells. weapons, monsters, and our general character looks. what do you think?
All in favor of making dark clothing and decorations available. Not at all in favor of less ambient light. At night the game is already way too dark IMO.
i like the fact that it can get that dark. almost, almost get a feeling of claustrophobia. in a dungeon that feeling is even stronger with the light spell or torch. well done imo. but as far as the feel, i think items should be in the game to assist with that - clothing as well. but i don't think the base game should be d arker or grittier.
You obviously haven't played on a mac yet It's like midnight with no moon in a cave when it turns nighttime.
I bet few players have their displays calibrated to a luminance of 120 cd/m^2, so it's hard to qualify "too dark" complaints. Mac OS used to use a system default of gamma 1.8 in display profiles that is now gamma 2.2 as of OS X 10.6 (same as Windows), but I would think that if you were to incorrectly compensate for the older gamma setting you'd end up with a "brighter" picture. I'm too lazy to check that. I don't think blaquerogue is really talking about *brightness*, though, rather aesthetics, i.e., "darker" as in "sinister"? If not, well, just turn the brightness down on your display.
No, I pretty much like the art direction now. Too dark and it doesn't fit the feel of the old ultimas at all.
i was talking dark like gothic houses, eviler looking characters etc... type of dark not actual light setting
+1 I agree the whole game could use a more sinister look. Of course a grassy plain during high noon should on a nice day should appear to be quite cheery. I hope we get weather soon. Overcast skies, rain lighning, and fog would add some darkness to a hollywood lit world.
Yes I agree we should have some sinister looking areas too at least. Cobwebs, creaky doors, lightning, dark clouds, trees with no leaves, a graveyard perhaps, blood leading to someplace. I think it would be cool. In searching for examples what I saw that makes most of the scary and dark games out there are the eerie sounds and music, and flickering lighting, occasional flash of lightning. It has to go dark occasionally for you to get your torches/candles lit and what could get you in the dark of course. ohhhhnooooo. The games I saw you don't see your character that much, like amnesia the dark descent, scary looking game and is a shooter. yikes had to turn it off
A game I played where I thought this was done very well was Clive Barker's Undying. All kinds of dark, barely lit areas with scripted events that gave a good jump-scare every so often
Well, yeah... I understand that. But there are things that can be done with AI behaviors, sounds, lighting and the lot that can set the mood. Like pack hunters that keep just out of sight/range while communicating with each other to narrow the noose, just as an example of two things (AI and sound) that could be used together to create a particular kind of atmosphere.
This is how dedicated players play: Look at all those wolves dying before my mighty blade strokes. Amazing.
Blaquerogue, there have been a couple different threads discussing the need for more evil or "darker" items hehe. I do not want to hijack your thread but will place some links here for you to look at. https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/forum/index.php?threads/evil-themed-items-please.13411/ https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/f...st-sinister-themed-housing.13045/#post-240531 https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/f...s/evil-housing-for-evil-themed-holfast.13128/
Dark/black armor is a must. Presumably when we get the ability to dye, clothing will be dyeable dark/black. Hope so. And no rare black dye tubs like in UO! Darkness for the masses!
