I hope not. I don't want SOTA to turn into a scripting/macro fest like UO.

LOL, mana regen? We don't have mana. This game is way too unique and original for mana. Mana is for lame games like WoW. We have a focus!! (mana/stam)

Technically its easier to macro in SotA.

1 Single level mechanism is easier than say 10 Individual level mechanisms.

EDIT: I was a huge fan of the UO skill gaining system

So are people already able to macro to get trained up in this game already?

If players were not afk macroing I would be amazed.

I expect it is highly traceable but doubt anything would really be done because it's only Alpha.

Macroing / botting either isn't hard

You are always going to have a portion of it in game

This argument is like saying, there should be no game so people can't cheat on it. Other example, there should be no marriage, so gay people can't get married. Is it so important to you what other people do that you are willing to sacrifice enjoyment for yourself to rule out what other people may do?

It may be like saying that to you, which I can respect. It's not like that for me however. In Ultima Online the ONLY thing I didn't like about the game would be having to hear other players fizzle spells on them selves over and over like a broken record while they tried to macro their magery, or whatever skill. To me it was UO's only flaw. People standing in popular areas obviously afk. .ruining the sound immersion with their constant fizzles or the sound of whatever poor animal they were beating on. I don't see how giving people the incentive to afk macro would make the game any more enjoyable, so I would say yes it is important for me as I greatly enjoy the game the way it is now.

Personally, I love usage-based skill systems, I hold Darklands to be the last truly great RPG ever published. That said, SoTA can't use one without breaking one of its core design goals, the player-driven closed-loop economy. People will grind toothpicks endlessly to improve carpentry, artificially inflating the cost of raw materials, inflating the cost of non-toothpick finished goods and littering the landscape with millions of unsaleable toothpicks. This was the problem UO faced in its early days, the solution then was to keep the skill system and open the economy, the devs have stated they wish to try the opposite this time.

Wow. News on Use Based Skill Advancement (experimental testing) broke hours ago on Starr's NBNN Interview. I can't believe nobody is talking about it. :)

Come on...how about some speculation...some hype?? Anyone Excited to see what they have planned???

Have seen a bit of what is planned, and i like it. It should in fact keep most playstyles happy. It is not the UO system.

Really exicited about this possibility! Haven't had a chance yet to listen, so trying not to get my hopes up, but this seems like great news. Time to see if my phone can stream the interview without pausing to buffer every 20 seconds like it was doing yesterday :)

This is EPIC news! I was hoping something like this would make the combat system...Character development does have some hope!

**Being able to improve your skills upon use is something that is rarely seen in games these days. Leveling systems get very redundant...So this will be the key to giving me a character who truly feels like he is gaining power, knowledge and experience.

Amazing news regarding advancing skills based on usage! I love systems like these. My hope is further that we remove levels entirely, but we could still keep XP as a kind of resource with which your character spends on things like skills or some such.

Eagerly waiting to see what they planned. My guts (and Themo) makes me believe i'm going to like it!

Either way, to me this is a step towards the good direction. To try this approach shows me Portalarium's willingness to consider the will of the players even if that means to move away a bit from current implementation.

    Horraaay!!
