I've been reading through the Release Instructions (up to 28) and so far I haven't noticed any mention of intent to calibrate the speed of travel on the Overland Map to game time.

For example- How long of a journey is it on foot from Ardoris to Brittany? 3 days journey? If so- should it actually take 3 days in game to make such a journey?

And what of boat rides? Passage through control zones? Should they be instantaneous?

Just wondering what the current thinking is on this.

EDIT: Sorry... I didn't mean to state it actually "should" take that much time. Just wondering if there is any "current thinking" from the Devs on how it should or shouldn't work.

    3 game days = 3 real hours.

I don't know what you think is fun but spending 3 hours to get from one place to another is not in my spectrum of fun.

Totally agree.. but I guess it would solve that problem of Regional Economies, if I knew I would need to spend 3 real hours traversing the map just to get to the public vendor, I think I'd just sell where ever I happened to be.

Time passes at a 24 to 1 ratio as Lord Barugon mentioned. So if it takes you 15 minutes to walk across the continent, that is the equivalent of 6 hours. This doesn't line up with what we've been told of hex size and how large the world is supposed to be (massive) so we can assume that 6 hours walking across Novia represents actually taking rapid steampunk transit.

I think that if it's not fun then I wouldn't be inclined to play.

In order to make time passage realistic, you'd have to have a seamless world and no overland map. The overland map is a compressed representation and, ideally, you'd make time pass quicker on it. That's what I'd expect to be done in a single player game. However, its something you can't do in multiplayer, since the time has to sync for everyone.

    So yea. :/

This could be done in offline play but for multiplayer it's just not feasible.

Even if- in the end- gold can be exchanged for fast passage (or buffs applied that greatly speed up overland travel) I was just wondering if there was some standard of time/distance that could be used as a ground-level basis for any of that.

Clearly, people aren't going to want to actually spend three hours making the trek from Ardoris to Brittany. But I wouldn't think it completely unreasonable to expect a player to do that at least once...

When horses / mounts are added if ever things will speed up even more.

I would have no Problem with longer travel times IF there would be a mesningful way to circumvent them. Like a boat that travels from Britanny to Ardoris three times a day and transports you for the right price (random example).

It takes long enough as it is to navigate the map. If they made it take longer to get anywhere I guess a lot of people would stop playing me included.

I can appreciate cargo ships traveling at some slow rate to balance economics. But players just want to move.

If there's a delay, there should be good reason for it such as a build up for PvE/raid or a choke point to fight through for PvP.

That's the facts as I see them :D It's a small, small world...

But boat travel getting longer o_O? "No way is that happening" ;)

Unless there's something to do like fighting your way across it :)
