Key Manager

?

Would you rather:

  1. Have a Key Chain that manages your keys

  2. Have keys remain in your inventory as individual items

Can we please have something similar to the map atlas with keys?

After needing keys to various places my inventory is beginning to get crowded with them. I figured we could add something like a Key Ring which would hold all of the keys gathered. This would allow for viewing only a single inventory item while making available all the keys one needs to open doors.

I understand this may impact current functionality if the code is searching for a key that is in inventory. I would prefer moving the key out of the chain if I need it as opposed to having all keys always in inventory.

Make or buy a small bag. You can even right-click and rename it keys.

You could say the same thing about maps and putting them in a bag vs putting them in an Atlas. I think the benefit to a feature like a key ring would be for the game to recognize this specific inventory as a place where keys exist when trying to open doors. thus never worry about putting the key somewhere and also only seeing a single inventory item for keys.

Well, the issue with that correlation is that the Atlas currently IS just a bag for maps. It needs better functionality (right click to "manage maps" and open the container, but double-click to open the map of the current scene).

But keys should have similar functionality on a Keyring.

So, a reskinned/renamed small bag item? This should be easy for devs, and it could give us more things like belts (for tools) or pouches (small bag again, I know!)... reskin current items and rename and there's our keyring. Hide anything within this 'bag' from the main inventory and we'd be happy! :)

I agree with you. The only potential coding obstacle I foresee is having the keys be recognized by the locked doors. currently the keys are held in the main inventory. There would most likely need to be a change in order for locked doors to recognize the key chain as an inventory as well.

Nope, I keep all my keys and scrolls and a few other items in a Backpack item in my inventory, never a problem using scrolls or opening locked doors with the keys.

It wouldn't be a big deal to code, I wouldn't think. It would just need to recursively check your bags for keys.

Edit: and for an actual keyring, it wouldn't be that big of a deal either. The code for unlocking stuff is probably linked to one script that could be changed and have the effect applied to anything that uses it.

Yes. But I'd vote to auto manage everything. Keys, maps, quest items, craftables, consumables, etc.

Craft a bag, re-name it "Keys" and place all your keys in it...having the Devs do it for you is frivolous waste of time, as there are many, many more important things they need to work on.

There is a reason "Wishlist Requests" forum exists... If you do not like that people wish for different things then I recommend you pack up your belongings and leave.
