I have put together Brandon Sanderson's most recent lecture series from this year. Last year's was great, this year's is better.

If you want to win fan fiction competitions, listen to these lectures. If you want to gain an audience for your work, listen to these lectures. If you want people to read past your first 3 sentences, listen to these lectures.

Poets' Circle wants a healthy community of writers to exist and prosper. So why not go straight to a master of Fantasy dominating today's market? Sanderson certainly is amongst the greats!

    Wax Poetica, Ye Storytellers,

    Grandmaster Bard Holt Ironfell

P.S. If you're planning to write for NaNoWriMo, get in touch! I'm going for 100k words in November, would love some company as crazy as I! ;) I'll be posting a cheat sheet of writing tips soon.

    Thank you Grandmaster,

I highly second that recommendation for anyone to listen and take in as much as you can from these posted lectures. There are those that may say, I already know how to write. Then let me ask you, "What crime is there in learning further to improve your ability?"

I shall also be writing more and consideration is high for NaNoWriMo. With that said, I shall now begin to enjoy the above lectures for the second time.

Holt, I also look forward to your continued writing tips, as they are a good source for others to learn from. After all, it was yourself that brought my quill to scroll in this community nearly a year past. It is only fitting your guidance would still be one I recommend to others.

    Holt,

The only exposure I've had to Brandon's writing was the last 3 books of the Wheel of Time which I really enjoyed. I've been looking for a new fantasy book/series to read and was looking into some more of his work. Can you possibly make a recommendation as to which series of his might be a good place to start?

    Thanks!

    Yes these are awesome Holt!

Have you read all Hickman's work yet? Need to give him the nod here. :)

I was hoping that BotA would be released one day as a soft cover as I don't have a tablet and try not to lug hard cover books around to work. I did read some of the Dragonlance stuff many, MANY moons ago. I was in the bookstore yesterday and they only one of his books and it was number 2 in a series so I couldn't walk out with that unfortunately.

Maybe I'll go try another store today. Any suggestions on the best place to start for Hickman?

Try the trilogy, the Annals of Drakis. Very interesting similar ideas to the Obsidian Order in BotA.

Thanks, going to see if Barnes and Noble has a better selection than the local bookstore I prefer to support soon.

I've read his Mistborn trilogy, which was pretty good. You can currently get book 1 (The Way of Kings) of his current series (the Stormlight Archive) for free from iBooks, but it's just a special promotion apple put on for the update to iOS 8, so act now!

and from Amazon, which matched apple's price:

I meant this thread to highlight his lectures as tools to hone your 'writing 'craft, rather than talking about 'reading'.

    Holt,

This is fantastic stuff. I'm looking forward to listening to the whole series (managed to get the first one in).

Oh you mean the drafty narrated stories? The novelette?

As far as the novel goes I'm going to remove all that info dumping at the start and push it back into dialogue and such. I don't like the fact I spend a page on background before action happens. I can do better (and do) in many other scenes in those stories. :)

What did you like about the first one?
