I guessed that they were nordic runes assigned to English letters. I was just wondering if the assignment was completely random, or it was actually based on similar sounds that those runes would have represented in an old language.

I heard a rumor from a drunken sailor that they are the same characters only made with a different font. I don't know if it is called the SoTA font but it would be if I were in charge of the world as it was created/revised by Lord British himself.

I am not off to mope because I am not in charge of the world.

In this case it is English words spelled in a runic font. The letters themselves are similar to English anyway, with fairly similar pronunciation, but that shouldn't be a surprise given that both languages have the same root: i.e. they are Germanic. Caveat: most English words are Latinate, but the most commonly used words are actually of Germanic origin (Anglo-Saxon). The runic alphabets were the pre-Latin alphabets found in Germany and the Nordic countries.

Some English and Modern Scandinavian words have the same root in an older Germanic language (e.g. Earl / Jarl), while some other words in English are thought of having Scandinavian ("Nordic") origins: e.g. Knife came from O.N. Knif (/Knifr).
