I asked the same thing. I had no idea either.

It's odd, but yeah that's how it works. It would make a little more sense I think if you could somehow find yeast culture in the wild and use that as opposed to going to a store and buying it from an NPC, but that's just a small gripe.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if we can harvest it eventually instead of buying from an NPC. I believe it is considered a fungus, so perhaps it might be a by-product when we harvest mushrooms at some point?

But to answer the OP, yes, it takes 1 Jar of Yeast Culture to craft a jar of Yeast Culture recipe... but it produces 2 jars of yeast (so you profit 1 jar).

If you grow a bunch of wheat, then craft the wheat into flour... you can convert 1 jar of yeast culture into many jars of yeast culture... and all it would cost at that point is the empty jars.
