A single book costs over 5000 gold to make.

Using the pricing list created by the BMC in their first general assembly, the resource and production costs to make a single book would be 4400 gold.



Leather x 4 = 400
Spool of Cotton Thread x 5 = 2000
Maple Wood x 20 = 2000

So then on top of that the labor and mark-up price might make books cost as much as 5000+ gold per book.

I actually LOVE that books cost so much. But there's one problem with this. You can buy a blank book in Owl's Head from an NPC for 2 gold.

Unlike arrows, I do NOT think it makes any sense to simply create more books during the book making process. That's not really what the problem is - not enough books are created.

The problem is that NPC's are selling things that players are supposed to be making on their own. So what I'd like to see happen is NPC's stop selling books completely AND you get a few more books when you create them yourself (something like 5).

Also, I'd like to see NPC's stop selling everything. We have an economy that can support it now, so let's just cut this off and see where it takes us.

If anything this also shows prices are out of wack.

 

I have no problem with the 3000 gold cost for a spider carapace. It's a rare drop. It's used to make cool stuff.

Prices are out of wack, but this is pre-alpha and nothing going on now will matter much at launch. However, it would be nice to have an environment where we could TEST the player economy and not this NPC artificial economy that we're using right now. We've tested books, arrows, and beds, now it's time to test the economy.

 

With prices out of whack nothing in the economy is going to make sense....ou can't charge 5000gp for a book. It just doesn't make sense.

The spider carapace doesn't make sense as something needed to make a book.

This is like taking a bunch of apples and trying to make them add up to a bunch of oranges.

 

I totally disagree with your first statement. I don't think you could be more wrong. You can always charge whatever people are willing to pay. In the case of books, I don't know what they used to cost, but I hear they were quite expensive and rare long ago.

Also, you don't need a spider carapace to make a book. You are confusing what was written in the OP.

 

The more they cost, the less the world is spammed with unneeded content (adverts to gold selling sites etc.) through them.
Also there may come a time, in which 5000 Gold is almost near to nothing ... if you see the inflation in Ultima Online you know what I mean.

 

That explains the high cost of college textbooks.

Wow that's incredibly pricey. I would love to see choices of higher or lower quality materials in the long run for higher or lower quality book binding.
