He is just correcting the fact that I painted a broad brush against both. GPU is up due to miners, memory due to other supply issues. Either way, they are both double or more in price now.

I'm embarassed to admit that I am asking that. DDR4 in smartphones is really a thing? I would imagine it would be too hot to have next to a person's face! It could be that I have gotten so old that my idea of current technology really needs to be updated.

Trying to be "cheap" I bought two AMD R9 Fury's (4GB each), so I could CrossFire. I have an AMD FX 9590 Eight-Core Processor and 32GB of RAM (DDR3 I believe).

I was thinking of upgrading this year. I might just get a new Motherboard and an Intel processor and see if that helps.

Yes, smartphones use DDR4. This is an old article that explains what happened then, and is still an issue now(I wish the prices were now like the prices in the article!):

Here's why DDR4 Ram prices have spiked.

Here is a more recent article that discusses storage and rams current state of affairs:

Go with AMD. The bug that impacts AMD is not as bad as the combo of both bugs on Intel. You'll save a shed load of money and have more than adequate performance for any gaming you'll need for close to 4 or 5 years if you go with the right CPU.

You would still see better performance with SOTA upgrading the CPU, as it is a more CPU challenging game. Move your GPU over, lowering some settings might not be required and you'll have a solid experience with SOTA on an upgrade Mobo with RAM and a solid CPU upgrade.

I am currently running a pc with:
    x99s MSI Gaming 7 motherboard
    Intel i7 5820k 3.3 ghz (6-core) processor
Corsair H100i cpu closed loop liquid cooler
Thermaltake Core V71 Full ATX case
    32 gig (4x8) Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR4 PC2666mhz
    2 x MSI radeon R9 FURY X 4gig HBM video card (Crossfire)
    EVGA 1300watt supernova G2 PSU

Already purchased new parts for a new build list is below.
Asus ROG Zenith Extreme x399 motherboard
    AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950x
    Enermax Liqtech 360 watercooler
    Thermaltake Core w100 XL-ATX Case
PSU, GPU's and ram will be salvaged from my previous build.

Sadly I was looking forward to amd frontier vega or 2 vega 64 cards for crossfire to replace my 2 fury cards.
I just hope and pray that Sota will run without a hitch on my new system.
