Backer totals on the main website

I did look for another thread on this topic but didn't see one so apologies in advance if I missed it.

The backer totals on the main site have been reading 22k or so Kickstarter and just over 5k SotA recently but when I looked this morning it just says 64,748 New Britannians.

Now I don't want this to turn into another discussion of the types of backers (which is maybe why it has been changed) but that total is quite a jump isn't it? I must be missing something because it has gone from 27k to nearly 65k overnight - or at least that is what it looks like to me.

Am I misremembering the old totals?

Speculation it may be registered accounts (created by bots) spiking the numbers rather than paid supporting users. I'd like to think thats the explanation! Or a simple maths bug where someone put in a * rather than a +
