I was just running over a lawn when out of a sudden black balls appeared around me.

I first thought of a graphical glitch like Snow displaying black, but the black circles are too big for that or for rain.

The black circles are not static but moving and others reapeearing like black Will-O-Wisps...

Edit: Leaving the area and returning makes them disappear.

Can you target lock them? I wonder if they aren't glitches bunnies or squirrels.

It's a graphics glitch. I used to see it in Owl's Head a lot.

I think these are Dark Wisps and those trying to convince you it's a simple glitch may be colluded with the Cabalists who sent the attack in the first place.
Dark Wisps are very powerful and can bring some nasty effects to your avatar such as unstable framerates, long load times, crashes and erroneously loaded stats in public instances.

Are you using the CPU's integrated graphics?

I highly recommend getting a decent discreet graphics card for a much better experience.

You should have seen how terrible it looked and how erratic it felt to move ingame (and that was only off-line) years ago when I first started SotA and put it away again due to my old PC´s stats (32bit Windows XP SP3, 4 GB RAM as the maximum for 32bit OS, AMD FX-4300...) so everything I see now is already far better and move more fluently, with the exception of overdecorated lots in larger towns. And even then it´s acceptable.

I don't know about the Windows client but the Linux client still has a 32bit version, which is completely unusable. Attempting to run the 32 bit client will simply crash as it will run out of memory before the scene is loaded.
