Details: still occassionally encountering zom... naughty brats that i can only hit with autoattack. not sure if dragging them to a new location fixes it: the last one was in a pack of them.

The Naughty Brats don't take any damage doing special abilities. You can only damage them with auto attack. It doesn't happen to all of them. It random which ones won't take special damage.
