Crash after upgrading to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

    Title: Crash after upgrading to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
    Reproduction Rate: Always
    Blocker? Yes
    Details: The game crashes almost immediately upon launch, showing a black window for a few seconds, then crashing. GPU driver version or SotA installation type does not matter. See details below.
    Steps to Reproduce: Do a clean installation of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, install the latest proprietary GPU drivers from Ubuntu Graphics drivers ppa. Install SotA (Steam or standalone). Run SotA, observe the crash. Exact details inside spoiler.
    1. Download Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus 64-bit desktop version:

    2. Set up installation media using the downloaded ISO image.
    3. Perform a fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04.
    4. Make sure the system is up to date, and install the proprietary the GPU drivers, and reboot:

    5. Install the standalone SotA client launcher:

    6. Run the SotA client launcher, and let it install the game:

    Processor: Intel Core i7-4810MQ @ 3.80GHz (8 Cores), Motherboard: MSI MS-1763, Chipset: Intel Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th, Memory: 16384MB, Disk: 750GB Hitachi HTS72757 + 120GB KINGSTON SHFS37A, Graphics: MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3072MB (967/2500MHz), Audio: Realtek ALC892, Network: Qualcomm Atheros Killer E220x Gigabit + Qualcomm Atheros AR9462 Wireless

    Software:
    OS: Ubuntu 16.04, Kernel: 4.4.0-21-generic (x86_64), Desktop: Unity 7.4.0, Display Server: X Server 1.18.3, Display Driver: NVIDIA 364.15, OpenGL: 4.5.0, Compiler: GCC 5.3.1 20160413, File-System: ext4 (ecryptfs), Screen Resolution: 1920x1080

    Additional information:
    - primary version tested was NVIDIA 364.15 (all the logs are from this version)
    - also tested with version 361.42 and version 355.11 (all from the Ubuntu graphics drivers ppa)
    - also tested with the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 GPU (so it does not appear to be GPU specific)
    - also tested with NVIDIA driver using bumblebee (Linux Optimus implementation)

    All the GPU drives and bumblebee combinations crashed in the same way.
    Before installing 16.04, the machine had Ubuntu 15.10 with NVIDIA driver 361.42 with everything working, including SotA.
    - primary testing was done in standard standalone R28 SotA client (all logs from it)
    - also tested standalone R29 QA client
    - also tested Steam R28 client (file integrity test passed OK)

    All the SotA installation versions crashed in the same way.
    I ran a number of other games from Steam, using the latest NVIDIA driver version, with and without bumblebee. The tested games included BioShock Infinite, Company of Heroes 2, CSGO, Metro: Last Light Redux, Pillars of Eternity, Sid Meier's Civilization V, SM Civ Beyond Earth, SOMA, the Talos Principle and XCOM: Enemy Unknown. All the games performed flawlessly, without crashing and with full expected performance, making me conclude that the fault is not in system hardware or configuration, but in SotA installation.

    The Player.log indicates that the game gets the GPU memory size wrong, not sure if this is of any consequence or not.

    As an aside, the standalone installer seems to be unable to change the file permissions of the game binaries installed in /usr/local/games (777 permissions and player user account as the owner). Not sure if this relates to the crashing problem but it's definitely a security issue.

    Hi all, helm and me discuss this problem several days - Black screen and crash.
    I tested 2 PCs with a different linux distros....=)
    So, i think problem is not in hardware, game cant set resolution and\or graphic settings, prefs file must be created by game, but, while game is crushing prefs cant be created, so, just create it and put in
    ~/.config/unity3d/Portalarium/Shroud of the Avatar/
    Try this prefs file (under spoiler) and, its important - dont forget to change resolution height and width to your primary display resolution set. May be dont need to put all options from my file, il continue testing, but...this may help =)
    This is only for Linux. (I dont know how it will work under Windows)

    If you resize Unity panel or may be another panels on a workspace you can get black screen again, if it happened, dont need to rewrite prefs, just edit resolution height and width again, to default resolution set of primary display.

    Yes, curiously enough copying of the prefs settings indeed does work around the problem, so at least I can play. Thank you @Indarien! :)

    I'll check out some Ubuntu earlier release versions where I also reinstalled the clients from scratch (without any issues) to see how they behave.

    Some additionals.
    Unity panel can be resized, and ifyou resize it, you will get black screen again =)
    If it happen, dont need to rewrite existed prefs, just go to prefs file and manualy set resolution height and widht to default monitor resolution. And this will solve issue.
    So, i think, all panels, objects that can be resize can be a reason to get black screen.
    I have updated my post.
