I don't really like the endless mastery system as a basis really and prefer a points based system. As it is I can't see why everyone won't train up the innates from every tree to a certain point and then set them to maintain. The only innates/skills that seem to require you making a "choice" are ones related to the armor you are wearing or weapon you choose.

In this it seems that choosing to be a (pure) fighter or archer is rather punishing when compared to the breadth of skills one gets from being a spell-caster.

They are giving up damage in their primary school by training the attunement in the opposing one.

And pure "anything" builds barely exist right now. I feel like there is a major damage resistance gap between physical damage dealers and magic ones, but almost every class needs to hybrid right now.

Magic users don't need to go outside of magic. But if you want to swing a sword and board (or worse, play a 2-handed sword) you're very limited in choice unless you also sling spells.

I've played the melee/mage, ranged/mage and 'pure' mage, and can say I like playing with magic only. One I removed my dependency on my polearm (and now use a staff, exclusively), I found magic to be perfectly fine (with attuenement), no need to look back at the (very nice) polearm skills that I used to use.

I have cross trained Air and Earth, so those are always a balance in power, but giving me less weakness.

With you there. There is no drawback and minimal investment to acquiring magical innates.

i think if your caster of any certain spells you should have the attunements of those skills, since you are practicing that type of magic.
