Is it Portalarium's intention that Steam is the recommended patcher? Over two and a half hours later, on a gigabit service, I'm still downloading using the launcher.

I've noticed it always seems a bit slow early on. Sometimes it helps if you wait a while or stop and restart. The launcher is basically using a torrent download so speeds are also dependent on where it's getting the files from. And the longer it's been the more people will have those files.

I have the P2P off. What I do is restart the launcher if it is going slow. This time I restarted it 5 times until download speed came in at 2.5 MB/sec. The first 5 times the speeds were around the usual 300 KB/sec. I don't have a clue as to what is going on.

Same results here. 100MB pipe. 5 restarts. Gave up and used the steam client. Instant success.

I didn't reset for fear of corrupting the patch. In the end, I didn't make it into the game until after noon.

This time I went to the torrents RSS page and downloaded it on a regular torrent client, so I didn't have to wait for the launcher to hear about the new version before downloading could start. Then I dropped the .torrent and .sotapatch files into the Downloads directory, waited until I heard on IRC that the update was open, and started the launcher. I was also updating two SotA installs, so it was better all around to do it this way.

FWIW, I had about a 6.6 ratio on the torrent when I canceled it just now, with the 300K bytes/sec upload cap I have set in my torrent client.

if you look at the options, it is designed to allow p2p downloading as well.. since you have a gigabit service, allow for that and let the speeds be faster for everyone else. sadly, bandwidth has become a finite resource due to greedy ISPs and high costs for backbone usage.. if that wasn't the case, i'm sure eff would find something else to fight. :)

It took me two hours to download R26 from Steam, but that's entirely due to (mostly) crappy Australian internet.
