I bought black dye and I bought a cloak from the tailor in Owl's Head. However dropping the dye on the cloak (like a repair kit) gives a message that the cloak cannot be dyed. None of my other equipment can be dyed either. So what can be dyed and how do you dye it?

Plain cloak is supposed to work. Any crafted armor should be dyeable.

purchased cloth chest and legs, fortified cloth chest and legs is what I have found so far.

crafted cloth armor does not work.

Old crafted may not work, it may not have the necessary data tagged for dyeing. Just a thought.

So to dye an item you just drop the dye on it in your inventory or character window like you would use a repair kit to repair an item? (i.e. it is not done at a crafting station)

Sold the Reagent merchant in Owl's Head, though I'm sure they are available wherever fine alchemy products are sold. :)

I crafted a nice set of chainmail just before the release, while looking forward to dyes. When we updated it all turned into Augmented Chainmail. I'm not sure if its all chainmail, but the Aug set is not able to be dyed.
