I've seen it numerous times. They should at least fall down before they become a rez target!

Is it that they start to cast it just as an ally registers as killed, and is in the process of animating dying?

They start to cast before I've dealt the killing blow. It's like they sense the upcoming death and precast rez.

Can they convert the "heal" spell they cast to a rez? Is it one and the same? Also I'm not sure what the self heal spell does that they appear to use because I don't see them gaining health (when there is just one of them and they cast it on themselves).

Current hypothesis is that the heal spell and rez are the same. The first action is to heal and the second is to rez. By the time a mage thinks to heal it's ally, it's usually near dead so the first function fails (heal) but the second function (rez) lands on a now viable rez target.

No way for me to verify that.
