This may be on the drawing board, but if it's not ... listen up.
Ingots and bars both require 4 ore to produce. Bars however weigh twice as much as ingots.
To make a bar from ingots, you require 4 ingots.
To make an ingot from a bar it's 1:1.
    So to summarize:
Making ingots from ore, it's 4 ore-> 1 ingot that has a weight of 1
Making bars from ore it's 4 ore -> 1 bar that has a weight of 2
Converting bars to ingots it's 1 bar -> 1 ingot (so you lose 50% of your iron content)
Converting ingots to bars it's 4 ingots -> 1 bar (so it now cost you 16 ore to make that bar)

Silver and gold use the same bar and ingot molds
Bars of silver and gold require 4 ore -> 1 bar
Ingots of silver and gold require 1 ore -> 1 ingot

I understand this is virtual reality, but we still ought to respect basic physical laws regarding the conservation of mass. :)

I suggest that if a bar is going to weigh twice as much as an ingot, then they shouldn't require the same quantity of raw materials. And when you smelt them down to resize them a bar should yield 2 ingots and 2 ingots should be required to make a bar. And if precious metals are going to have different ratios, why not whip up a special ingot mold for them.
I accept that crafting is still in its infancy, but making adjustments like this to make basic recipes consistent won't require much in the way of Dev time, and would certainly improve our perception of things.

    I'm just sayin'
