Greetings! I'm a new "Adventurer" and am very excited to start playing! A few questions on the beta that opens up for us tomorrow:

    1. When we log in, will it be like we just started the game or will we have eq/gold/etc. to play around with?
    2. Are there any specific areas we should focus on in-game or do we just try to break things and report them?
    3. Any other info or advice for this first timer?

UO was always my favorite and I can't wait for SotA!!!

    Some answers.

    1) When you log in to the release sessions you do have some starter gear, you have some armour and a weapon. you also have some crafting materials, crafting tools, and gathering tools. There are chests spread around the world that contain epic gear and founder rewards.
    2) Nothing specific, just play the game. Try out the conversation system and quests, craft, explore, fight stuff, etc.. There are lots of dungeon type stuff to rxplore. Play with these stuff that just got in to the game. If yoyo really want just try and break things.
    3) I read the docs they supply for each release. They'll tell you what's new and what's broken.

Hello sirmymalone! Welcome to SotA! :)

    To answer your questions:
For now, when you log in, you'll start with a bunch of items to help you get started crafting and adventuring. The actual assortment varies release to release and can change without notice.
Do what you like! All parts of the game need tested, from exploration to crafting to combat to housing. Just be aware that the game still has a lot of work to be done and will not offer a full-on "game" experience. So have fun! Then report it as a bug.
Try a little bit of everything. All parts of the game are still extremely basic, but there's enough there to get a fundamental feel for how the game will play. Also, when R7 is over and if you haven't done already, watch all the Deep Dive videos and read all the megaposts in the Community Announcements forum. There is lots of great info between those sources that can help you better understand the game and its development track.

Besides that, just sit back and enjoy the forums. :) This place stays pretty active even when the game isn't on, and it can be quite fun! You'll have lots of opportunities to share feedback on the game's development if you'd like to do, especially when DarkStarr posts a new megapost. :)

Welcome, Jiirc! I think most answers have you covered.

I have found that starting each new release you pretty much have nothing. There has not been much to buy until recently and the crafting is pretty open without skill advancement at this time. I usually play single player for the first session and use the crafting area supplies to make items. There are a few materials you have to buy, but you can make a few simplier things and sell them to fill the gap. Once I am equipped I will then join multiplayer.

Each new release has been a little different, so expect the unexpected. ;)

    Hi all,

only joined and pledged a few days again myself.

    Welcome sirmymalone :)

Can I please ask of those who know far more than I, is there a basic controls instruction page yet or perhaps a guide to chat keyboard shortcuts etc? Just want to be ready to jump straight in for R7 tomorrow!
Or is it all on the Wiki and I've just answered my own question? :)

    Thanks
    Russ

Mrrockitt, if you read Darkstarr's latest post on about R7, the one just out not the R7 / Q3 one, there are links to known issues and instructions.

    Awesome, thanks for the replies!

I have been watching lots of vids on the evolution of releases, game play, etc., and have also been perusing the forums. Any good community sites I should know about?

Hello mrrockitt! The more the merrier! :p Welcome aboard!

There really isn't a full-on instruction page yet. Enderandrew once maintained a fantastic Unofficial FAQ thread that still contains a lot of great information, but he's been MIA for a few weeks now. It should be up to date as of R6, though.

SotAwiki also has a good lot of information about the game. The SotA Travel Guide can keep you apprised of some great places to visit in-game. The good folks over at Avatar's Radio can keep you entertained with lots of great music and special SotA events / news. I'm also a big fan of The Caverns, where the admins are fairly active and quick to report on SotA news, especially where it comes to roleplaying. :D

If crafting is your thing, you might find my site, SotACrafter, useful, and smack maintains a spreadsheet tool to help crafters as well.

There are lots of other fantastic community sites focused on Shroud of the Avatar, too. These should be more than enough to get you started. :) If you have other specific questions, just ask! We're all happy to help, and most of us will end up learning something ourselves if you do. :p
